About SUSU

Say hello to Southampton University Students’ Union. Oh, and guess what? You’re Already a Member. Now, let’s find out what that means…

SUSU is your Union. We represent you as a student and help you make the most of your University experience. If you ever want advice or support we’ve got it covered; if you ever need us, we’re waiting to speak up for you; and if you just want to be part of a community that boasts over 200 ways to have a great time at uni, then you’re definitely in the right place. Here's everything we do, in a nutshell:

1. Student Engagement

As a SUSU member you get access to everything you need to make your uni experience the best it can be. We support a huge range of sports clubs, recreational societies, special interest groups and other activities. Beyond sport and societies we’ve also got a huge student media empire providing a range of opportunities within radio, television, print journalism and film production at the union, as well as a vast array of ways to make yourself invaluable through community volunteering and charity work.

2. Representation

We know you take your studies seriously. SUSU exists to represent you to the University, ensuring you get the education you’re paying for. We look after your School Presidents and Course Reps, who in turn look after you and make sure everything on your course is running smoothly. Outside of the University, we’re also here to make sure your voice is heard on anything that directly affects you, from matters in the local community to your views on national issues such as top-up fees.

3. Your Welfare

In fact, whatever problem you might run into, the Students’ Advice & Information Centre (SUAIC) is always ready with confidential, friendly advice. Trust us, they’ve seen it all, so never be afraid to visit them; they really know their stuff. They’re just one of the ways that we’re here to support you; we also run regular campaigns to make sure that you’re as clued up as possible on everything from sexual health to housing, and provide services such as Nightline and the Safety Bus to keep you supported and safe 24/7.

4. An Awesome Nightlife

We’ve also got your nightlife under control, with a range of treats including The Cube, a 1700-capacity nightclub; The Stag’s Head, your union bar; The Bridge Bar, offering you alternative evenings in jazz, comedy and live music, and the Uniplex, a 330 seat cinema. We take pride in making sure the best events are put on at your Halls Bars as well. They’re all the cheapest, closest and safest nights out around.

5. Handy Facilities on Campus

We also offer a range of other facilities - like bookable rooms, equipment, and minibus hire. We also run the Union Shop and Café SUSU. By running these outlets on campus, we can make sure you get access to the stuff you're likely to need at student-friendly prices. What's more, buying from SUSU's commercial outlets puts money straight back into your pockets. All our profits are fed back in to student activities and projects that directly benefit you.

6. Run by the Students

Lastly – and best of all – SUSU is governed by students. Every February, many of you love the place so much that you decide to help run it by battling it out to be elected as a Sabbatical Officer for the Union. There are six paid, full-time sabbatical positions, each with different responsibilities. There are also nine executive officer positions, which are voluntary part-time roles.

So that’s SUSU. Uni life made incredible, safe, easy and all under your control.
