Setting up your own project couldn’t be easier. ‘Getting Started’ can be a scary prospect, but hopefully here are a few triggers or guidelines to help you along the way…
The first thing to think about is; ‘The Idea?’
Once you have that IDEA (i.e. The thing I’d most like to change in my community is the relationship between students and the local residents), you can go to the next step…
Ok so you’ve got your idea but you have no clue how to start… Here are a few questions (or check points) to make sure you cover everything you need to;
It’s sometime really useful to get things down on paper (…or laptop for you IT savvy folk) so take some time out to really think about each of these questions. Speak your ideas and PLANS OF ACTION out loud, once your IDEA’s appear real they can transform…
Think about this from the start! (i.e. What am I aiming to achieve?)
Then, when it’s all over….Have you achieved what you set out to do? Did the project go according to plan? What changes (if any) have happened along the way?
It’s important to evaluate your project. Evaluating is a great learning curve, it allows you to look at how you’ve managed your project looking at what went well and what didn’t. You could even ask the people involved? How did they find the project went? Have a look at the downloadable evaluation form for some inspiration. You can use this one, or make one of your own!
Ok so now you’re thinking… ’Well, I’ve got this GREAT idea but I don’t have any money to do it!’ Well fear not…we’ve even thought of that too! Click here to find out more!
If you have ANYTHING you would like to talk about, however small, silly or outrageous, please get in touch. The Community Volunteering Team has run successful projects more times than Peggy Mitchell has said ‘Get out of my pub!’ so don’t hesitate to talk to us. What we don’t know about running projects isn’t worth knowing!
The best people to speak to regarding your Student Led Projects queries are;
- Projects can fail! HOWEVER, this may not be anything to do with you! It may be that the people needed for the project aren’t able to commit at the same time you can; OR it may be that there aren’t enough resources available for your project (i.e funding).
- Don’t be disheartened if the project didn’t turn out as you expected –they often alter along the way!
- Seek advice! You are not alone; there is always support and advice available to you. If you don’t want to talk to anyone, there are some very useful links (below) that may help you along the way too!
- Student Led Projects are very often HUGE SUCCESSES! Remember you have achieved something fantastic, something that not all people can do…you have managed your own project! You have run a project that has been beneficial to the people in your community; you have involved them in something that they probably would have never got involved in or will again (…unless you run another project, wink, wink, nudge nudge!)
- Managing your own project helps you grow as an individual, and we’d recommend it to anyone!
