A Student Led Project is any project that a student has control over. If you have an idea for running your own project, SUSU has a £10,000 fund that you can apply to use in order to get your idea off the ground. All you need is a good idea and some brief information on getting started.
Alternatively, if you want to get involved and help run one of the already established events, take a look at some of the existing projects below:
AllotSoc have worked with local schools to get children enthusiastic about growing their own fruit and vegetables with a view to helping schools to grow their own produce, and then cooking it in the canteen to promote healthy eating.
The Stop Aids project visited local schools and youth clubs to talk about the importance of sexual health. Their aim was to try to get young people to understand sexually transmitted infections, HIV and Aids using a ‘student to student’ approach.
Baby SUSO (Southampton University Symphony Orchestra) performs small scale concerts and facilitate workshops with a range of schools across Southampton, encouraging pupils to get excited about classical music.
The Buddy Scheme is for students coming to Southampton for the first time on the Erasmus Exchange scheme. The project aims to integrate exchange students into university life and British culture, helping to make their time at the University of Southampton memorable and fun.
Each week a group of students go to sing with elderly residents in local care homes. The project is simple, fun and extremely rewarding, and has now been running for a number of years. Why not get involved?
A group of PhD students have run the Lightwave Education Project over the past few years, and take their demonstration of scientific principles on the road to educate children and students around the UK.
Every year, tens of thousands of people get together to make a difference in their communities for Make a Difference Day, the UK’s BIGGEST day of volunteering!
Community Volunteering runs an event or campaign each year that aims to ‘Make a Difference’. In the past there has been an Intergenerational Project, where local youngsters taught the older generation how to play the Wii and send texts.
Community Volunteering is always looking for fresh ideas and we are ALWAYS looking for volunteers – and this is a fantastic one off event to get involved in!
Over the past two years SUSU, the University and Southampton City Council have worked together to clear up the local area and raise money for charity with the Recycling on Your Doorstep scheme.
An army of volunteers take to the streets in Portswood and around the Halls of Residence to collect any unwanted goods from local houses, so that EVERYTHING can either be RECYCLED or sold. This year over £1,500 was raised for the British Heart Foundation, and literally tonnes of recyclables were collected! Why not join in next time?
Student Volunteering Week is a national event which happens every year around February, and aims to raise the profile fo student volunteering. Previous events have included gardening at a local primary school, tea dances and street collections. If you have an idea for Student Volunteering Week, then let us know by emailing volunteering@soton.ac.uk.
This is your very own student festival, which aims to build relationships between the community and SUSU, at the same time as helping to showcase what clubs and societies at SUSU do throughout the year with interactive workshops, stalls and performances. The event is open to anyone and everyone that wants to come along - so make sure you get involved!
