Studying at University is totally different to what you might have been used to at secondary school. Even though you have lecturers and tutors who are there to support you, the onus is on you to put in the effort in terms of lectures, reading and assignments – meaning that sometimes, and especially if you’re new to University, you might be struggling with it.

To help you, we've picked out some resources that can be found online that we thought were particularly useful for students studying here at Southampton! Essay Writing

  • Southampton's guide, aimed at Dyslexic students, but a very useful document nonetheless! It explains the method very clearly and in great detail, so check it out now
  • Really detailed website with 10 steps to a good essay, with further links with even more info so why not have a look?
  • Great website with possible solutions to questions we all have, such as writer's blocks, or how to organise an essay properly, have a look now
  • Short and sharp webpage with 10 key points that are really useful as a checklist of things to do as you write your essay, provided by the University of Kent

Revision

  • Southampton's document on memorising information - lots of good tips! View the PDF now

Dissertation Writing

  • This is a brilliant resource from the RLF, it looks at possibly every angle of a dissertation and the troubles people might have with them! Check out the website now
  • This website is very clear at outlining a structure of a dissertation and what each section should contain, just click through the pages - well worth it!
  • Not as comprehensive as the others, but tackles literature reviews really well! View the PDF now

Reading and Research Skills
