Academic Presidents facilitate the means by which the student voice is heard; by co-ordinating the Course Reps and passing on key information from the Academic Unit. Without an Academic President, communication between the University and student body would not be possible, and many of the initiatives introduced by the University would lack vital student-led guidance.
Academic Presidents lead the courses that they have been elected to represent, and look to tackle issues and problems that are prevalent within that Unit. They are in regular contact with staff, and raise problems that the Course Reps they lead have brought up.
Once every three weeks, they will be expected to meet with their Course Reps (this can be done informally and/or online), before then meeting their Faculty Leader to discuss any issues that are arising, as well as any initiatives that the Unit is introducing that might be of interest to the rest of the University.
Once a term, all the Presidents meet and attend an Academic Open Forum with the VP Academic Affairs and Faculty Leaders to discuss improvements made by different Units. The idea is to share best practise, as well as discuss any issues people have within their role.
Academic Presidents for 2011/12 have already been chosen, however, there are still some vacancies. If you are interested in running for one of the vacant positions, then please email vpacademic@soton.ac.uk.
Presidents for 2012/13 will be elected in Semester 2, with elections being held online. To run, you will be required to submit a 500-word manifesto online along with a photo. Full details about the rules and timetable for the election will be released nearer the time.
