Faculty Leaders are the essential bridge between my role as VP Academic Affairs and all the Academic Presidents and Course Reps. They provide me with the vital issues affecting you, so that I can go to the University level boards and really fight on the issues that are current and most affecting you.
Sasha Watson - VP Academic Affairs

What do they do?

Faculty Leaders are the most senior Student Representatives within SUSU.

There are 8 Faculties within the University, and there is one leader for each of them. Their main responsibility is to co-ordinate the Academic Presidents, ensuring they are able to carry out their duties fully and properly. This includes raising issues that were not sufficiently dealt with at an Academic Unit level to the leading Faculty staff members.

As the most senior Academic Representatives, they also report up to the VP Academic Affairs and sit on SUSU’s Education Committee, where they bring action logs of issues that have been difficult to resolve, so that the VP Academic Affairs Officer can raise them with the University where necessary and provide support.

What is more, Faculty Leaders are also Student Leaders – the most senior Volunteer Officers within SUSU, being recognised as having a large responsibility. This means they sit on Union Council, the highest decision making body within SUSU, where Union policy is debated and set.

How do I get involved?

For 2011/12, Faculty Leaders will be elected at the start of Semester 1, alongside the Course Reps and other positions within SUSU.

This means that anyone at Southampton University next year can run for the position; whether you’re a first year or a Postgraduate student – anyone can run, and as long as you have the desire for the position, you will receive the fullest support and training to ensure you are able to carry out your responsibilities.

You will be working with the VP Academic Affairs very closely, and as such, the position has lots of room for anyone to take up the position and really grow and develop themselves.

Information about the election will be released at the start of Semester 1, but in the meantime, if you would like more information, you can contact the VP Academic Affairs at vpacademic@soton.ac.uk
