The President is responsible for chairing all JCR hall meetings and has to attend the SUSU JCR Committee where they are a voting member. It is the Presidents job to be the voice of residents in these meetings and bring up any issues relating to their hall. The President will also have an overall responsibility for organising and co-ordinating the events run by their JCR. They will liaise with the Student Activities department in order to achieve their goals.
The Vice President helps support the President to carry out their duties, standing in for the President if needed, and also sits on the SUSU JCR Committee. The President and Vice President are ultimately responsible for everything their JCR does and should support all the other officers in their various roles.
The Treasurer is in charge of the budgeting of all events, campaigns and any money allocated to sports teams of their hall. They are also responsible for ensuring accurate records are kept of all income and expenditure. Along with the President they hold responsibility for any money taken in the course of the JCR and it is their job to make sure it is calculated correctly and accounted for. Each JCR gets a budget set at the start of the year and it’s up to the treasurer to keep track of this.
The Secretary takes the minutes of each JCR hall meeting and is responsible for making sure that these minutes are stored, sent to SUSU and made available should anyone request them. They are also responsible for making residents aware of when JCR hall meetings are happening.
The Campaigns Officer runs and promotes SUSU campaigns and makes their President aware of any particular issues in hall so that they can be brought to the attention of the Union. They sit on two SUSU committees (Welfare committee and Environment and Ethics committee) and have a change to get a direct input on current issues.
The Sports Officer is responsible for promoting the existing hall sports teams and if necessary helping set up new teams. The Sports Officer should be available for the sports teams to contact when they have problems, want to promote their team or want to request funding from the JCR. In some halls this role is split in a male and female Sports Officer.
The RAG Officer is responsible for running events and campaigns that raise money for charity. They will also work very closely with the RAG Officer and represent their halls on RAG committee.
The Media and Promotions Officer works with the Marketing department and the President to design produce and distribute publicity for the JCR and come up with ideas to promote campaigns. They will also be responsible for the use of social media their committee to interact with their constituents.
The Communities Officer supports the many different communities of students in the University (e.g. Postgraduate and International students). Their role is to help these students integrate into life in Southampton, encourage students to participate in events and support SUSU campaigns and events that involve these communities. They will sit on the Equality and Diversity Forum where they can raise any issues that these communities of students are having and suggest ways of solving these issues.
