Sabbatical

These 6 students work full time for the Union and are paid to do so. You can either take a year off from your studies, or hold the position in the year after you've graduated.

As the role of a Sabbatical Officer is a full time position, SUSU pays the officers for their work. This year the annual salary is around £19,000. The new Sabbatical team will begin in late June, 2012, starting with a handover week with the outgoing officers.

All Sabbatical positions run against the RON ('Re-open nominations') option. This is also the case if there is only one nominee for a Sabbatical position.

Trustee

The role of a student trustee is a voluntary position. The officers in this role will be entrusted, together with other trustees, overall responsibility for the work that SUSU undertakes. They will focus on the strategic direction of SUSU, ensuring that the Union creates and implements strategies that meet its objectives.

Trustees are legally responsible for ensuring that SUSU operates to standards set by parliament and the Charity Commission.

Please note that elected part-time trustees of the University of Southampton Students’ Union cannot also be employed as members of staff by the University of Southampton Students’ Union.

Eligibility

Whatever position you choose to stand for you do have to be a registered student when you stand. Sabbaticals, the Ethical and Environmental Officer, the Equality and Diversity Officer and the Trustees Without Porfolio become Trustees of the Students' Union and this comes with certain obligations. The following cannot legally be Trustees:

  • Anyone under the age of 18
  • Anyone who has an unspent conviction for an offence involving deception or dishonesty
  • Anyone who is an un-discharged bankrupt
  • Anyone who has been removed from trusteeship of a charity by the Court or the Commissioners for misconduct or mismanagement
  • Anyone under a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986.

If you have any problems with these and are still interested in standing in the elections, please contact the Returning Officer to discuss your personal situation.
