Chess

The Chess Club is a place for chess players of all standards to meet. We provide equipment and balanced opponents whether you are beginner, intermediate or top level player. Join us for casual play at our weekly club nights to practice, improve, and enjoy an environment in which players can learn from one another and analyse games. Or just enjoy some casual chess with friends and a drink. Players are also given the opportunity to play competitively. We run competitive opportunities within the club such as our comp nights on Mondays. These allow players to gain experience of competitive chess over the board and players are given the opportunity to play Monday nights as rated or unrated games. In addition to comp nights, we have 3 teams playing in the Southampton Chess League and we encourage keen players to get involved and join a team suited to their chess ability. We also enjoy entering external tournaments including the Hampshire Chess Congress and British Universities Chess Championship. So, come along to our Thursday casual chess nights, Monday competitive nights and our planned socials. Our club nights take place on Thursday evenings in Below Deck on the bottom floor of the SUSU building and the venues and timings of our comp nights and socials are announced on our Discord. Previous socials include pub crawls, bowling, quizzes, friendly games with other universities and much more! The committee members are always happy to help or answer any queries or uncertainties prior to or at our meet-ups.

Social Membership 2023/24FREE01/08/2023 - 30/06/2024This membership is for people who are interested in playing chess casually. Our Thursday evening club nights are free for all to attend and play chess in a social setting. As the club's costs for these sessions are low, Social Membership is free, but signing up helps support the club and keep track of its size and reach. This also allows you to play at our Monday rapid competitive nights, although a paid English Chess Federation Silver account may be needed to play rated games.
SCL League Membership 2023/24£15.0021/01/2024 - 15/06/2024This membership allows you to participate in our teams in the Southampton Chess League (SCL). Membership fees will go towards the SCL entry fee and travel to away matches. Any excess will be re-invested in club equipment. All team members playing 2 or more matches for the university team must purchase this membership, regardless of whether you have played home or away. You will also need to purchase membership of the English Chess Federation (ECF) separately.
