Human Powered Submarine

We are a group of students at the University of Southampton that design, build, and test human powered submarines to compete internationally! We have competed in the International Submarine Races in 2015, 2017 and 2019 at Naval Surface Warfare Centre in Carderock, USA. The society consists of students from a range of degree types and stages and our members come from a variety of backgrounds including engineering, naval architecture, astronautics & aeronautics, biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. However, just because you're not a STEM student doesn't mean you can't get involved! We welcome students of all disciplines to join us to help with engineering or SCUBA dive with the sub. More information on the race can be found here: http://www.subrace.eu/ https://internationalsubmarineraces.org/

We are SUHPS and we Design, Build, Test and Race human powered submarines to compete internationally!

We have competed in the International Submarine Races in 2015, 2017 and 2019 at Naval Surface Warfare Centre in Carderock, USA, and most recently in the European Submarine Races at QinetiQ's Ocean Basin in Gosport, one of the largest hydrodynamic testing facilities in the world. Over the next year, we will be working on the design and manufacture of our future submarine to replace Tempest, laying the foundations to compete at the European submarine races in 2024.

Regardless of the level or subject of your degree, we welcome members from all areas to take part in SUHPS. SUHPS is both a great place to meet new people, and offers amazing experiences that always get people interested in interviews. Any skills you need to take part that you may not already have will be taught, so don't worry if you aren't a STEM student! If engineering isn't your thing, we have many other roles such as on our dive team, which we are hoping to overhaul this year to provide more regular opportunities for divers to get involved. We are also involved in educational outreach, developing links with industry, and fundraising. And of course, most importantly, we run socials!

If you are interested in SUHPS for the engineering challenge, being part of our dive team, or any other roles, please get in touch with any questions
