Union Council is made up of 75 voting positions consisting of:
To make policy, whether this is expressing an opinion on an issue such as student housing, instructing an Officer to take some action or making a specific change to the way the Union is run.
To keep track of your Union Officers, the work they are doing and the decisions they are making and check if they are behaving appropriately.
Agenda and papers for the meeting can be found on Google Docs here when available or on the SUSU minutes website
Ideas are discussed in the first hour of Union Council by as few or as many people as are interested. In the second hour of Union Council, councilors(voting members) will make a decision on what to do with the idea.
The options available are: Do nothing with the idea, refer to a committee or officer (eg societies or Vice President Student Engagement) to develop into a Policy Proposal or consider immediately in the same meeting.

Council is split into three sections:
Ideas discussion - Any student can submit an idea to Union Council however large or small. It can be to change something about how the Union runs, or ask the Union for representation on a specific issue involving say the University or another body. Union Councillors will informally discuss the idea and decide whether to develop it further at committee.
Question time of officers - Students can submit questions online or at the meeting for Officers to answer. Union Councillors can also question sabbatical officers against their progress in meeting their year plans or implementation of Union Policy
Policy Proposals - Union Councillors can bring policy proposals for formally debate and vote to council. Councillors can suggest amendments to proposals but these must be submitted in advance of a meeting. Once a Policy Proposal is voted on and passed it becomes Union Policy and must be carried out.
