While the team are supported through a team of qualified trustees, Cameroon Catalyst provides a fantastic opportunity for students wanting a taste of international development charity work. Whether organising fundraising events, designing and building the project or helping promote the work of the charity through media, there is a role for everyone to get great experience. Our current focus is on water and sanitation, as 50% of rural Cameroonians lack access to safe drinking water. We are therefore currently planning a number of news wells to be installed in remote villages to help relieve this issue and provide thousands of people with this basic human right.

Catholic Society
Student Life  Join
The University of Southampton Catholic Society (CathSoc) is a real joy to be part of, even if we say so ourselves! We're just one big family with a wonderful mix of students from many different backgrounds and countries, which makes it possible for everyone to feel welcome and at home. Our main activity is hosting a Mass every Sunday during term time in Building 67 (The Nightingale Building) at 6:30PM, follwed by a home-cooked meal on campus. We also organise a CathSoc night every Tuesday at 7PM in the Faith and Reflection Centre, where we get a chance to relax and meet likeminded students in a friendly and open environment - there may be food here too if you're lucky!. To top it all off, we offer the opportunity to go on various trips such as our very own retreat on the Isle of Wight in November! It has always been a much-loved and enjoyed weekend away from the stresses of university life. The society is based at the Faith and Reflection Centre, and we have support from our wonderful chaplains, Sr Valentina and Fr Jaya, who are always available to provide help, advice or just have a chat - and of course, the student committee are always there to help you feel right at home! Everyone is welcome to our events, even if you haven't been to Mass in years (or aren't even Catholic!), so feel free to bring along a friend or flatmate if you wish! How could you say no to all this?! We can't wait to meet you! P.S join our Facebook page to keep up to date with everything going on at the society: http://www.facebook.com/groups/uos.cathsoc/

Welcome to the Southampton Vixens Cheerleading and Dance page! Our club is made up of five squads; the Competition Cheer Squad, the Competition Dance Squad, Stunt Groups, Varsity Dance Squad and the Varsity Cheer Squad. Our Stunt Group, Competition and Dance squad compete regionally and nationally. Whilst our Varsity Squad performs at AU events. It pleases us to say that this past season has been one of our most successful yet. At nationals our Competition squad beat one of their biggest rivals for the first time in 4 years. They came 2nd in a really competitive division and cannot wait to fight for first place next year. Our Dance squad also had an amazing season winning National Grand championship titles once again. Our coaches cannot wait to replicate this amazing success next season. This year, our Varsity squad have continued to grow from strength to strength. They've come so far by integrating further into the AU with performances at Varsity, Volleyball and Basketball games including the All Star Event. This year they put out one of the hardest routines we have seen from them at Show day and hit zero. We cannot wait to see the same successes replicated in the 18-19 season. Vixens integrate greatly within the Athletic Union by having weekly socials, fundraisers and attending Varsity. We also aim to have a big presence within the wider community; this year we raised £513.00 for the Rose Road Charity fund. We hope to continue to raise money for such deserving charities this following year. Vixens is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people whether you have Cheer and Dance experience or not. Futsal Club

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game that is widely played across the world and is officially recognised by both UEFA and FIFA. The name comes from the Portuguese Futebol de salão, which can be translated as "indoor soccer". The Laws of the game are set by FIFA & UEFA associations. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of 5-aside football, the games are played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a size 4 ball with a reduced bounce. It is played between touchlines (walls or boards are not used) and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head-height. Games are 20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock (similar to basketball) with time-outs permitted. The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, quick thinking, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces and under pressure. Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development; players of the calibre of Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Xavi, Fabregas amongst many others have played Futsal to develop their skills. Southampton University Futsal Club will participate and compete, for the first time since its establishment, in BUCS 2014/2015 Western 1A League and Trophy. The club will also organise weekly friendly matches / Intra-tournaments for its regular members. Korfball is a mixed gender Dutch sport with similarities to basketball and netball. SUKC was established in 2012 by a handful of players who already knew the sport. Within a year, they had assembled and trained up a cohort of Spartans - all new to the sport - and surprised everyone by finishing 5th at Nationals. Boosted by its early success, SUKC's membership exploded in 2014 with a second team already filling out. The Spartans climbed to 3rd place at Nationals, with our very own Nikesh Patel voted as player of the tournament. An incredible achievement for someone who had started just a year ago. Our Spartan pros, Alex Bell and Kate Hotton, were also called up to represent England at the U21 European Championships. How did SUKC celebrate its third birthday? With the treble of course. Not only were the Spartans crowded National Champions, they went undefeated in both the league and the OKA Chris Carter Cup! To polish off a perfect season, Alex Bell, Kate Hotton, Nikesh Patel and Emma Bryant made the GB World Cup squad. Fancy yourself as a Spartan? Want to contribute to 2018/19's success? We'll train you up - no prior experience is required. Contact us on korfball@soton.ac.uk or get in touch through our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

We can't go as far as saying that Spikeball will make you better looking, more likeable and finally be able to talk to that cute person across the street... but it will. Spikeball is a team sport played by two teams of two players around a Spikeball set. Opposing teams line up across from each other with the Spikeball set in the centre. The ball is put into play with a serve. Once the ball is served the players can move anywhere they want-there are no sides and boundaries. The object of the game is to hit the ball onto the net so that the opposing team cannot return it. Each team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball, similar to volleyball. In TriVolle, possession changes when the ball hits off the net. The ball cannot hit the rim and must get off the net in one bounce. The rally continues until the ball isn't returned properly. Spikeball is currently the fastest growing sport in America with over 1 million players. Universities Allied for Essential Medicines Southampton
External Engagement  Join
Universities Allied for Essential Medicines is an international student movement that aims to combat the access to medicines crisis that claims millions of lives every year. Through concerted organising and campaigning on our own campuses and across the world, we aim to create a more equal system for addressing the health needs of those who are denied access to essential medicines and healthcare. ---------------OUR VISION--------------- Universities and publicly funded research institutions will be part of the solution to the access to medicines crisis by promoting medical innovation in the public interest and ensuring that all people regardless of income have access to essential medicines and other health-related technologies. ---------------OUR MISSION--------------- As a non-profit organization rooted in a global movement of university students, UAEM aims to (1) promote access to medicines and medical innovations in low- and middle-income countries by changing norms and practices around academic patenting and licensing, supported by our own independent research, (2) ensure that university medical research meets the needs of people worldwide and (3) empower students to respond to the access and innovation crisis. ---------------OUR VALUES--------------- As committed students from all over the world who passionately believe in social justice and health equity, we find it unacceptable that millions of people do not have access to essential medicines. We are particularly concerned about people in developing countries who are disproportionately affected by the access to medicines crisis. Universities have a social compact with society and, as educational and research institutions, they have a responsibility to promote and manage the deployment of innovations for the public benefit. In no field are the moral imperatives to do so as clear as they are in medicine. Students are uniquely positioned to push for normative change in their universities and research institutions. We will use the intellectual sophistication, rigor and integrity of our members to fight for increased innovation as well as access to medicines and health-related technologies for all. Our work is guided at all times by principles of non-partisanship, democracy, transparency and respect.

Business Society
Education  Join
Due to the recent change in faculty name from the Management school to Business we have rebranded our society from The Management society to The Business society also. The University of Southampton Business Society is primarily focussed on helping students from every course within the university’s business school to build strong relationships with each other. We also aim to become a medium for the school to promote events and facilities to be inclusive of all students, whether or not they belong to the faculty. We thoroughly believe that taking an interest in business is integral to future employability and have confidence that through this society we will engage an interest in business from those within other disciplines. We are keen to run a calendar of social events throughout the academic year - for students to engage with their fellow course mates outside of lectures. We will put a strong focus on helping freshers integrate, and make friends by communicating with the business school buddies. With this we hope to create a support network within the faculty and between the different year groups. Our main goal is to help facilitate students to gain as much as possible from their university experience. We will build upon the old society’s sports team and introduce others. This will help students to get to know each other, work as a team in a fun environment, and help those who do not desire to be part of a sporting society to get some exercise while having great fun. We have a great deal of interest from students about the possibility of providing them with a ball, of which has not happened in the last academic year. This will give students something exciting to look forward to, increasing their levels of student satisfaction around the newly branded business school. We are expecting this event to be a huge success. Finally, we plan to promote employability and other such events through our Facebook page in order to help students interact with businesses, giving them as much information as possible about the options available both now and in the future. We will also conduct a book sale in both semesters.

Karate-Do Shotokai
Sports Development  Join
Thinking of taking up a Martial Art or just want to learn self defence? Then try KDS Karate! One of the main reasons people take up a martial art is to learn to defend oneself. With regular practice, KDS karate can teach you how to do this effectively. KDS emphasises mobility, co-ordination, timing and balance with a relaxed body condition. This means that KDS karate can be practised by anyone regardless of age, build or sex. KDS karate teaches far more than how to fight - in our training we mainly practise with a partner, as we have found over many years that this develops self-confidence and makes learning karate a very rewarding experience. There is another reason to practice Karate-do Shotokai - a great social life. So if you're new to Southampton or have been here for some time, it is a great way to meet people. We have regular social events throughout the year and all of the national courses we attend/host have an evening social event where you get to meet people from clubs throughout the country and across Europe! The Southampton University KDS Karate Club was founded by Steve Hope, the longest serving member of the KDS in the UK, who was recently awarded an honorary degree by Southampton University for his services to the club. SUKDS has now been in existence for over 30 years and is one of the strongest in the UK's KDS organisation. The club hosts a number of international courses during the year and members regularly travel to other courses around the country. Normal club sessions are led by the club's senior instructor Gavin Rothwell (5th Dan) and several other black belt instructors. For the Friday night senior practice we are lucky enough to have both Tony Lima (5th Dan) and Steve Hope (5th Dan), both members of the KDS technical executive committee. The training atmosphere is friendly and informal, and there are regular social events organised throughout the year. Practice times/venues for 2018-2019: Tuesday 17:30 - 19:00 Activities Room Saturday 09:00 - 11:00 Activities Room Friday 18:30 - 20:00 Martial Arts Room (Seniors by invitation only) If you want to try or join SUKDS please email sukds@soton.ac.uk or turn up to one of our training sessions on Tuesday or Saturday. One of the best things you can do when you come to uni is to take up a sport a great way to make friends and experience the fantastic feeling of being part of a team, so why not try something new and make that sport Mixed Lacrosse! You don't need any experience to join, in fact most people have never played before coming to Southampton so you'll be in the same boat as everyone else when you join up (of course experienced players are more than welcome). We are a fun, sociable and relaxed club, if you can't commit much time but still want to come along every so often that's fine. Mixed Lacrosse is a fast paced, non contact sport played with both men and women on a team, where you use a stick, known as a crosse, to throw a hard rubber ball, about the size of a tennis ball, between players and attempt to get it in the opponent's goal. We train every Thursday evening 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Wide Lane and have three teams, one for experienced players, one for intermediate players and one for beginners, that play matches most Sunday afternoons. Wednesday night, like for most AU clubs, is socials night! Our socials provide a regular mix of fantastic events from beer pong tournaments to our class Wednesday night out to fancy dinners and balls and don't forget huge bar crawls with our good friends from Men's and Ladies Lacrosse! There's something for everyone at Mixed Lacrosse, whether you're the ultra competitive sporty type, far more socially minded, or anything in-between. Our professional conductor takes weekly rehearsals with a professional accompanist, and the choir is over 180 strong, with the student section being approximately 30+. The mix of the two choirs gives us a unique blend of youthful voices with those of more experienced singers, as well as offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform musical works on a massive scale in an ensemble of over 180 voices.

Pianosoc is a friendly environment for all people interested in listening to or performing piano of any genre, at any level. We generally discuss all things piano-related and even have a weekly dose of a brief introduction to a new pianist, to broaden our scope of the piano world for members for which it has not been so exposed to. We try to spread the love of piano music. Increase interest for the piano. Make more use of pianos lying around on campus by putting together concerts and playing times, perhaps even one day funding our own piano. We want to be able to offer members who want to pick up piano playing during their time at university classes, for all sorts of levels, ranging from people who have never touched a piano before to those who just want to continue practicing. Our society will cater adequately for pianists of all degrees, something no other society does – especially for those piano players who aren't at a high enough level to join the university orchestra or at a low enough level to forget about piano playing altogether. We also offer piano lessons for both groups and individual ranging from beginners to advance levels. There is a definite demand for Pianosoc; many people play the piano but never really get to meet other pianists since an individual activity. We provide a network of pianists, teachers and people who just have a general love for piano music.

Capoeira

Capoeira was born out of the slave trade around 500 years ago in Brazil. It was developed by the slaves as a martial art, however it was designed to look like tribal dances and rituals so that the slave masters would not suspect the violent aspect of the art. A crucial component of learning Capoeira has been the ability to mask your movements and intentions in an apparently non-threatening dance, combining combat and music. At Southampton we have an enthusiastic Capoeira teacher, Mestre Joaozinho, who teaches the Angola style of Capoeira and we also have open training sessions to practice together. You're welcome to come to any of our sessions! Your first session is free. In this way, we welcome peaceful debate of issues within our clubs and societies. How can we get Corbyn into power? What is happening at our university with the lecturer strikes? Why is the VC getting £450,000 while our education is getting more expensive while being gutted from the inside? Why do landlords have so much power over tenants? Why do we settle for rubbish living conditions from slum landlords? Come along to our meetings at 7pm Every Monday in Nuffield Theater to find out the answers to these questions... and what's more how to solve these issuses! Socialist Students is a democratic campaigning organisation with groups in universities and colleges throughout Britain. We play a leading role in the fight against fees and cuts. We say that education is a right not a privilege - no to all cuts, fees and privatisation. As well as this, we campaign on a range of other issues. Racism, sexism, homophobia are all rooted in capitalism and are aimed at dividing ordinary people. We oppose the BNP and EDL, and have been important to organising counter demonstrations when the EDL have marched. We say no to war and imperialist intervention and fight for solidarity between working class and young people across the world. We are active in every struggle possible. On most campuses we hold weekly meetings to discuss the politics of changing the world. Join us and get involved!

These branches exist at: Imperial, UCL, LSE, KCL, SOAS, Nottingham, Brunel, City, Queen Mary, Goldsmiths, City, Cardiff, Kent, and Cambridge respectively. The University of Oxford and the University of Leeds both have a similar society. The University of Southampton ABACUS is founded in November 2013 by a group of both international and British Chinese students. Canoe Polo
Sports Development  Join
Canoe Polo combines kayaking and ball handling skills into an exciting contact team game, where tactics and positional play are as important as the speed and fitness of the individual players. The game requires excellent teamwork and promotes both general paddling skills and a range of other techniques unique to the sport. Each team has five players on the pitch (and up to three substitutes), who compete to score in their opponents goal which is suspended two metres above the water. The ball can be thrown by hand, or flicked with the paddle to pass between players and shoot at the goal. Paddling with the ball is not allowed, so teamwork is essential. Pitches can be set up in swimming pools or any stretch of flat water. The boats are specifically designed for Polo and are faster and lighter than typical kayaks which give them fantastic manoeuvrability. The boats also sport nose and tail bumpers for safety, and full face guards and specially padded buoyancy aids are also required to be worn at all times.

We are a small but still growing society and we run our society for two main reasons. One, we aim to make international students from India feel at home in a country so far away from their real home and two, we aim to help non-residential Indians or Overseas Citizens of India stick to their culturally rich roots. However, we welcome students of different nationalities and spread our Indian culture to them as well. As committee, the happiness of our members is our top priority, and we plan events according to this. We organise events like Dishoom , a Bollywood night out. We also celebrate festivals like Holi, which is one of our flagship events and we host Diya - the Diwali ball every year in collaboration with our university's Hindu Society. Both these events have seen sell out crowds. Our second flagship event is the Made in India Republic Day Celebration where we host an Indian cultural showcase with dancers from other universities performing in addition to our Indian Society Southampton dance troupe.
