1. Apologies and Attendance

The Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting.

  • Sammi Gardiner, Dance Rep on the Performing Arts Committee, was also in attendance.
  • Andreas Mathikolonis was absent without apologies.
  • Apologies were received from Lucy Dowdall, William Cable, Cecelia McSweeney and Lucy Upshall.

For this meeting, Chris McGeehan (Student Groups Officer - elect) co-chaired with Jamie Hemingway.

2. Approval of minutes from last meeting (Friday 7th March)

The minutes were approved by the committee.

  • Jamie thanked the committee members who had emailed him with information for the Student Groups newsletter.
  • On 25th March, the Democracy Zone Committee voted against the Student Groups Officer Student Enterprise Officer becoming a full voting member of the Student Groups Committee. In the near future, there will be a full review of Student Leader roles which may alter membership of some committee in SUSU.

1. Southampton University Guitar Society

  • This group did not attend the affiliation meeting and therefore were not affiliated.

2. Afrodynamix Dance Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Creative Industries Zone.  

3. Futures in Finance

  • This group did not attend the affiliation meeting and therefore were not affiliated.

4. Tamil Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Student Communities Zone.

5. Southampton University Flowboarding Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Sports Development Zone.

6. Aspiring Consultants Consulting Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.
  • As a condition of becoming affiliated, they were asked to send a copy of their constitution to the Democracy department.

7. University of Southampton Howard League for Penal Reform

  • This group did not attend the affiliation meeting and therefore were not affiliated.

8. Southampton University Muscle and Athletics Sports Society

  • The committee felt that the aims of this group were too general.
  •  It was decided that this group did not fulfil the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 0 voted for, 2 against, 2 abstained. This group was NOT AFFILIATED.

9. Southampton Women's Network

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.
  • In order to clarify the group's objectives, the committee asked if the group would mind changing their name to 'Women in Business' or 'Women and Business'. The group decided upon the former option.

10. Southampton University Skating Club

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Sports Development Zone.
  • In order to clarify the type of skatiing the group were interested in, the committee asked them to change their name to 'Southampton University Figure Skating Club'. The group were happy with this change.

11. Southampton University Human Powered Submarine

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 2 voted for, 1 against, 1 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.

12. Southampton Supply Chain Society

  • The committee felt that the group did not have clear aims and objectives.
  • It was decided that this group did not fulfil the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 0 voted for, 4 against, 0 abstained. This group was NOT AFFILIATED.
  • Jamie invited them back to a future meeting once their group's aims had been further clarified.

13. HIV Education Southampton

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.

14. Worldview Cinema

  • The committee felt that there was not enough distinction between this group and 'Film Soc'.
  • It was decided that this group did not fulfil the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 0 voted for, 4 against, 0 abstained. This group was NOT AFFILIATED.

15. University of Southampton Masonic Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 1 voted for, 0 against, 3 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Student Life Zone

16. HOMED

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.

17. Southampton University Irish Dance Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Creative Industries Zone.

18. UNA UNA Youth Southampton

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the External Engagement Zone.

19. ABACUS

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Student Communities Zone.

20. Southampton Kandyan and Bharata Natyam Dance Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 4 voted for, 0 against, 0 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Creative Industries Zone.

21. Cyber Security Society

  • It was decided that this group met the criteria outlined in Rule 11, section 2.
  • Committee moved to a vote; 2 voted for, 0 against, 2 abstained. This group was AFFILIATED and assigned to the Education Zone.
4. Support Package changes

Unfortunately, there was no time left for this item to be addressed. The paper will be emailed to the committee for ratification.

6. Date of the next meeting

This was the final Student Groups Committee meeting of this academic year. The next meeting will be during the Autumn Term 2014, committee members will be notified in the new academic year.
