Better facilities at Southampton General

Complete

The facilities at SGH are appalling and not in keeping with the standard of facilities at main campus or other satellite campuses.

We have an old library and a tiny smelly common room for a massive student population.

As we spend so much of our lives here (including nights and weekends) please please invest urgently in this especially the common room!! Expanding space/vending machines/sofas that don’t feel like sitting on a rock maybe?

Thank you.

Hi there,

Thank you for your You Make Change submission.

I am very aware of the issues surrounding the facilities and services at the hospital and the need for better SUSU involvement and presence is particularly something which is on my radar, not just for the hospital but all sites outside of Highfield. We have written a Sites strategy proposal paper which we have sent to University and Estates facilities outlining our position and are currently working through this with them to put a plan into place for how to increase facilities and support at Sites.

In relation to the hospital specifically, we have been in discussions with the University and the Trust about aquiring space at the hospital which we would renovate and turn into a bigger social and study space. The biggest problem at the hospital is over who owns what space, as it is shared between the University and the Trust and so it is often not as simple as you might think, or I would like, to simply rennovate spaces such as the current common room. The other problem at the moment is that there is also a seperate conversation going on with the Medicine faculty and the University about bigger and longer-term rennovations at the hospital, which I believe also includes the library. Whilst it's great that these conversations are happening, this has put a hold on smaller, more short-term quick wins such as the common room we are proposing.

As it stands, the University have agreed to look into aquiring the space we need from the Trust. They have also agreed to bring all groups looking to make both short and long term change at the hospital together to discuss how the all the projects fit together and create a timeline for change to take place. This was agreed at a meeting I had a couple of weeks ago and so I will be following up with the University about this after Easter.

If there is anything else we can do short-term or you feel we need to be lobbying the University on, please do let me know. My email is vpcommunities@susu.org

Kind regards,

Emily Harrison,

Vice President Student Communtiies, 2018-19.
