Change the absurd opening hours of the SUSU bouldering wall & squash courts

Complete

I believe that if the university asks students/staff who go climbing or play squash to pay the same mebmership as the ones going to the gym, the university & SUSU should provide the same deal in terms of opening hours. People paying for the Frequent Fitness membership and working 9am-5pm cannot use the wall or courts at all because there is a peak time 5-8pm and then the SUSU building shuts at 8pm. Because the buidling is shut on the weekends too, this leads to an absud sitaution that these members cannot use the facilities at all.

Hi,

Olivia here, VP Sports 2019-20. Thanks for putting in a You Make Change and your patience waiting for a reply during handover.

I have tried my best on this but regrettably there is not a lot that that can be done. Unfortunately as there are less students on campus it isn’t financial viable for SUSU to keep its buildings and facilities open during its regular term time hours. I explored if there was any possibility of us keeping Level One, with the climbing wall and squash courts, open longer after the rest of the building was shut. However, for safety reasons this is not possible as the site is supervised by SUSU staff not Sport & Wellbeing.

I’m sorry for your frustration around the Frequent Fitness membership. Following this You Make Change, I did approach Sport & Wellbeing to see if, given the SUSU opening hours, any consideration could be taken to users in cases such as yours. Understandably as this would decrease the offer of Peak Performer membership there was no change that could occur around Frequent Fitness at this time.

However, excitingly the cost of Peak Performer is decreasing as of August this year. You can upgrade your membership at any point so if you are still keen to use the Sports facilities in SUSU that might be a route worth considering.

I’m really sorry I couldn’t help more on this occasion, please continue to write in with any more suggestions. I will always try my best to help.

Hi there,

Thank you for your You Make Change submission.

We are currently in the process of our handover to our new Sabbatical team for 2018/19 and therefore a reply will take slightly longer. This You Make change will be handed over to our new Vice President Sports when she officially starts in the role on Monday 1st July and a reply should follow shortly after.

Thank you very much again for your submission and for your patience at this time.

Kind regards,

Emily Harrison
