Music Department President

As Music Department President I would push for creating more performance opportunities for students as soon as possible. Following the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, I want to make sure there are opportunities available for students to perform - whether that's working with pubs and cafes on campus or creating jam nights and gigs ourselves.

The reason each of us started out making music was because we enjoyed listening to it and playing or singing. I want to keep the fun of making music and listening going by centring some staff and student socials around listening and playing together. Some ideas include: beers, pizza and vinyl nights - maybe at Vinilo, where we discuss our favourite music, and coffee and waffles acoustic nights at somewhere like Muse where students get to showcase their music and receive some informal feedback. I would also work with music department staff to bring back other socials just for fun, for example the staff vs students football match.

Overall, I would make sure student's voices are heard and that the Music Department continues to address the needs and ideas that students have to offer. In my role as Deputy Head Girl in sixth form I was always putting student's opinions and ideas to staff regularly. Music at Southampton only exists because of us students, so making sure that each student has a place here to be themselves and that each of us can make the music we want to, is most important to me.
