This weekend we have an exciting collaboration walk with the University of Southampton Catholic Society! What better reason could we have to roll out our stocks of religious scenery, as we venture along parts of the ancient Pilgrims Way (the modern-day St. Swithun’s Way) and up into the north of Winchester.
The wonderful Cath Soc will be walking with us to help raise funds for a defibrillator at Southampton's St. Edmunds Church! Whilst it is optional, should you wish to donate, you can follow the link here
For this walk, we will start and finish in Winchester itself, heading first up north past Abbots Barton, through Abbots Worthy and briefly head east along the River Itchen to the small village of Itchen Abbas. From there we’ll cross the River (over a road, not fording it!) and head back west along the other side, through Avington and Easton then down along the “Three Castles Path” back into Winchester. It’s a fairly simple route and, you’ll be pleased to hear, is only 17.5km as opposed to the 21km challenge of the Dean to Salisbury Walk last weekend.
Once back in Winchester you are free to look around the Christmas Market to your heart’s content, hence why this walk will also aim to finish a bit earlier than last week.
-------Tickets and Times -------
The train we will be getting is the 09:30 from Southampton Central, which reaches Winchester for 09:47. Note that you can get on this train at Southampton Airport Parkway at 09:38 if that is more convenient.
You will need an Off-Peak Day Return to Winchester, which is £5.10 with a railcard, or £7.80 without one. OR from Airport Parkway this ticket will cost just £3.95 with a railcard or £6 without. As always there will be committee members at both stations to help if you need.
Don’t have a railcard yet? Well, maybe Santa can be generous this Christmas…or consider purchasing one – you’ll save a lot in the long run!
------- Weather and Stuff -------
The weather is set to be quite nippy this weekend! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Hand sanitiser
- (Optional) A face mask for the train and station
- A packed lunch
- 500ml of Water (minimum)
- Comfy, strong shoes
(e.g. not flip flops, sandals, or canvas shoes)
- A waterproof coat
Alongside those thermals, we really do ask all members to bring along a pair of walking boots!! These will help keep your toesies toasty and have a much better chance of keeping your feet dry should we encounter any mud. If you have any questions or would like any guidance, please feel free to message our page to access our friendly encyclopaedic committee members.
Please CLICK going/interested as this will allow you to get any posts, we make about this walk in your Facebook feed!
Sign-Up is not mandatory for our Day Walks, however, should you wish to, you can do so via our website for Test and Trace purposes. Regardless, we do encourage you to take a test beforehand to help keep us all safe.
