It was founded in Japan in 1948 by Doshin So, and is an efficient and effective form of self-defence. This group is headed by Adrian Starr-Sensei, who has been training in this style since 1981. The organisation is designed to be open and accessible to all, regardless of age, race, gender, beliefs, sexual orientation or ability. We attend weekend martial arts seminars, organise a variety of social events and run a Summer camp at the end of August. There will even be opportunities to travel abroad and experience training with different martial arts styles! Costs: The first session is always FREE. Training costs £35 per term (terms are: September - December, January - March, April - July). A one-time payment of £30 covers insurance costs, as well as WAMA membership, which gives access to international seminars and world-class teaching.

Welcome to Shōrinji Kenpō!

Shōrinji Kenpō is a formidable Japanese martial art, and an efficient and effective form of self-defence. It’s a great way to get fit, make new friends, and learn how to protect yourself and the people around you. This club is headed by Adrian Starr-Sensei, who has been training in Shōrinji Kenpō since 1981. He is a retired police officer with 23 years of service in the Hampshire area, and has a wealth of experience and stories when it comes to self-defence! Currently, sessions are held from 9am-12 on Sundays in the Activities Room, SUSU building.

We additionally offer sessions outside of the University. Classes run on Saturdays at Sway Youth Centre, Station Road, Lymington SO41 6Ba at 9-12 midday. We offer transportation to the Youth Centre each Saturday at 8:15 from the Crown Inn. As these sessions are outside the university, we charge £4 per session currently for University students and accept cash.

No experience is necessary to join, new members are welcome any time. This organisation is designed to be open and accessible to all, regardless of age, race, gender, beliefs, sexual orientation or ability – we pride ourselves on being a friendly and diverse community, from all walks of life. There are plenty of opportunities to travel and experience training with different martial arts styles!

Come along and give it a go – your first session is always FREE! We have a one-off joining fee of £30, which covers your annual insurance, training license, and lifelong membership of the World Alliance of Martial Arts. Training costs £35 per term (Sept-Dec, Jan-Mar, Apr-Jul), though reduced rates are negotiable for anyone who is struggling with money. We do not require a Sport and Wellbeing membership.
