Purchasing of Fairly Traded Items (0506P10)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Sustainability

Passed: 14/06/2010 | Lapsed: 04/02/2014

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • The recent efforts of PURE to increase the awareness of fair trade issues within the university and union
  • The successful stall at the Monday Market
  • The increased availability of fairly traded items within the Union Shop
  • The forthcoming application to the Fairtrade Foundation to become a Fairtrade University
  • The small premium in price for some fairly traded items
  • That not all Union-owned cafes and catering outlets offer fair-trade tea and coffee as standard, and that some staff are not aware of its availability
  • That ethical matters are important, and should be supported wherever possible
  • That the Union should pre-empt the status of Fairtrade University to promote and expand the good work that has been achieved
  • To ensure that fairly traded tea, coffee, fruit juice and hot chocolate are the default options in all Union-owned cafes and catering outlets, including both instant and fresh coffee where facilities exist
  • To look into providing facilities, such as coffee machines, where facilities do not exist
  • To encourage all non-Union-owned cafes and catering outlets to do the same, such as Boldrewood and Lattes
  • To increase the awareness amongst staff and students of available fair-trade items        within all Union-owned cafes and catering outlets, and of the Fairtrade University Status, when achieved
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
