Union Council Membership and Participation (0506P8)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Democracy

Passed: 14/06/2010 | Lapsed: 04/02/2014

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • The main purpose and values of the Student Union
  • That there are currently only 10 Union Council Ordinary Members (UCOMs) in existence
  • That positions within the union council still remain vacant, even several months into the new term
  • The current lack of active advertising regarding union council meetings and vacant positions on the council
  • That a healthy, democratic union should welcome membership from all walks of student life, and should not necessarily cap membership of the Union Council and turn away students who are genuinely interested
  • That membership to the Union Council should be actively encouraged so all students at the University have an equal opportunity to stand for positions that they may not otherwise be aware of
  • That by not advertising its vacant positions, the Union is undermining its core values regarding representation, participation, communication and equality with the general student body
  • That the union should elect, to positions on the Union Council, those students most suitable for the particular vacant position, and not fill vacant positions with unrepresentative students merely to fill all positions
  • To mandate the VP Media & Communications to actively advertise any vacant positions on the Union Council and upcoming Union Council meetings with available media including posters, flyers, SURGE and the SUSU website
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
