Central Funding for Postgraduate Students (0607P17)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Student Communities

Passed: 04/02/2014 | Lapsed: 04/02/2014

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • The contents of the National Postgraduate Committee’s April 2006 report entitled ‘The Market Failure of Postgraduate Education: Financial and Funding Related Issues’
  • The National Postgraduate Committee’s petition ‘We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to extend the student loans scheme to cover those undertaking postgraduate study’ on the 10 Downing Street website
  • The loans available from the Student Loans Company to all UK undergraduate students to help cover general living costs while studying at university
  • That such loans are currently not available to UK postgraduate students
  • The increased debts that UK undergraduate students will leave university with since the imposition of top-up fees
  • That the decision to pursue postgraduate study should be based upon a student’s desire and ability and not by their financial situation
  • That the increased costs of undergraduate study may further increase the influence of financial constraints upon a student’s decision whether or not to pursue postgraduate study
  • That the provision of loans for living costs to postgraduate students, from either the Student Loans Company or an equivalent provider, would significantly reduce the impact of financial constraints    upon any student’s decision to pursue postgraduate study
  • To support any appropriate national campaign pursuing the provision of such loans to postgraduate students
  • To work with other student’s unions and postgraduate associations to pursue this issue if no appropriate national campaign is forthcoming
  • To mandate the Postgraduate Officer to lead the Union’s involvement in any campaign it becomes a part of
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
