This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • SUSU Policy B3.9 passed by Union Council on 17th November 2008, mandating the Vice President Education and Representation to; “consult the student body to determine its stance on lifting the cap on top up fees and what action if any” and “report the findings of this consultation to Union Council at its’ meeting in February 2009, with a view to bring about any necessary policy decisions”
  • The report to Union Council on 02.02.2009 from the Vice President Education and Representation detailing the findings and conclusions of his three phase consultation process conducted between 19th December 2008 and 20th January 2009
  • SUSU policy and action on any issue should be dictated by what is in the interests of its members
  • The SUSU consultation of student opinion on Top-up fees is an accurate representation of student opinion
  • That SUSU should act in accordance with the findings of the Vice President Education and Representation’s report on this process
  • That any increase in Top-up fees will have a significant impact on increasing the levels of student debt
  • To amend its policy on Top-up fees to; “Southampton University Students Union opposes any increase or lifting of the current cap on top-up fees in England and Wales”
  • To mandate the Vice President Education and Representation to carry out a campaign in line with the recommendations of the report to Union Council on the SUSU Top-up fees consultation
  • In the event of significant change to the Top-up fees review, including its postponement or cancellation, to mandate the Vice President Education and Representation to report to Union Council and propose a suitable amendment to this policy
