Postgraduate Students Alumni Discount (0910P3)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Postgraduates

Passed: 08/02/2010 | Lapsed: 04/02/2014

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • The lack of statutory and general funding provision for students studying postgraduate courses in the UK in terms of tuition fee and maintenance loans
  • The exclusion of a wide number of students from studying at postgraduate level due to debt
  • Research from the National Postgraduate Committee (NPC) provides evidence that fear of debt has a strong impact on seventy seven per cent of students from poorer backgrounds who are considering future study, in comparison to thirty three per cent of students from a middle class background
  • That the national funding debate is exclusively for the provision of undergraduate students
  • That provision for postgraduate funding is “far greater and more flexible…in Australia.” (Vice-Chancellor Prof. Don Nutbeam)
  • That Alumni Discounts are offered by various schools within the University and by many Russell Group Universities
  • Offering an Alumni tuition fee discount to self-funding postgraduate students would provide increased accessibility to postgraduate education
  • That widening participation in postgraduate study is vitally important
  • That retaining quality undergraduate students will help develop the University and its profile as a leading Russell Group Research University
  • To mandate the Postgraduate Officer with the Vice-President for Education to campaign for a University wide Alumni Discount for postgraduates
  • To mandate the Postgraduate Officer, Vice-President for Education and President to      work with the University to continue the national debate to include postgraduates within the national funding
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
