SUSU Letting Agency (0910P35)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Trustee

Passed: 13/05/2010 | Lapsed: 07/12/2010

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • There are 7000 Freshers and only 5500 spaces in halls
  • There are 3000 International Students at this University who struggle with dealing with landlords
  • There are 600 Erasmus and International Exchange Students who are not offered accommodation
  • There are many students who can’t find house-mates, houses or are ripped off (or taken advantage of) by landlords
  • Cardiff Students’ Union operate a Letting Agency that made £1,000 in 2007, £50,000 in 2008, £70,000 in 2009 and is on course to make £100,000 in 2010
  • Cardiff Students’ Union spent £15,000 - £20,000 setting up their letting agency
  • The vacant commercial space where the Travel Centre used to be
  • The fantastic job of the SUSU Advice and Information Centre
  • Nurses graduate in September and December so have to sign short hold lease agreements at the traditional end of 3rd year.
  • That every Fresher should have access to halls accommodation
  • That International and European Students need more support in finding accommodation
  • That SUAIC is an incredible service, but is considerably overstretched
  • The improved welfare support that would be offered by such a service
  • That revenue raised from the Letting Agency could be put into Student Media, JCR, AU, Societies and the other Students Activities
  • That not all the vacant Travel Centre space needs to be used for the letting agency; other services, including Wessex Clothing could continue to operate there
  • That an outside company would not make students interests their priority
  • To mandate the President and VP Welfare & Societies to create a business plan for a SUSU run and owned Letting Agency
  • To report the progress of their work to UMB and Union Council
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
