Supporting the Transition University Initiative (0910P41)

Status: Lapsed | Zone: Education

Passed: 17/05/2010 | Lapsed: 09/06/2014

This policy was discussed at the following meetings:

  • That the university has published its draft strategic vision for 2015, which includes targets for efficiency and profitability, but not for sustainability or resilience See recent articles on the Wessex Blog: http://wessexblog.com/2010/04/30/transition-university-initiative-builds-momentum-in-southampton/ and http://wessexblog.com/2010/05/09/a-proposal-for-a-transition-university/. See also http://www.transitionedinburghuni.org.uk/
  • That by 2015 crucial tipping points in the climate system will likely be reached, Peak Oil will begin to affect our lives and the economy, and Global Inequality will continue to increase and be worsened as a result of these crises
  • That the Transition University Southampton Initiative is a group of staff and students campaigning for a different vision for the University that understands these challenges and acts constructively on them, as other universities are now starting to do
  • See recent articles on the Wessex Blog: http://wessexblog.com/2010/04/30/transition-university-initiative-builds-momentum-in-southampton/ and http://wessexblog.com/2010/05/09/a-proposal-for-a-transition-university/. See also http://www.transitionedinburghuni.org.uk/
  • That the current Strategic Vision of the university is short-sighted considering the converging crises of Climate Change and Peal Oil, and implicitly supports the status quo of business-as-usual in a time when great structural change is needed
  • That every organisation such as the University and SUSU has an implicit responsibility to both minimise their own impact in causing these problems and make a constructive effort to create and enact an alternative vision to mitigate them
  •  That Universities are a crucial place for Transition Ideals to be pioneered and illustrated as they can serve as an example for local communities and students, who when they leave university can spread these new ideas across the country
  • To support the goal of the Transition Initiative for Southampton to become a Transition University To work towards becoming a Transition Students Union in the meantime and provide a beacon example of how an organisation can make a difference.
  • That the Environment and Ethics Officer shall be responsible for assisting initiatives within the Union to achieve this status
  • To encourage Students to support the Transition Initiative in the University, Union, the City and in their hometowns across the country
Sorry, there are no Mandates for this policy
