The Association of British and Chinese University Students (ABACUS), was founded in 1994 at the University of Cambridge. Over the years, ABACUS has spread all around the UK and there are now no fewer than fourteen branches of this society whom we shall maintain close links with. These branches exist at: Imperial, UCL, LSE, KCL, SOAS, Nottingham, Brunel, City, Queen Mary, Goldsmiths, City, Cardiff, Kent, and Cambridge respectively. The University of Oxford and the University of Leeds both have a similar society. The University of Southampton ABACUS is founded in November 2013 by a group of both international and British Chinese students. With our similar culture and aims, we firmly believe by having ABACUS in Southampton, we can create a more diverse and welcoming community for both our members and the university as a whole!

Due to the recent change in faculty name from the Management school to Business we have rebranded our society from The Management society to The Business society also. The University of Southampton Business Society is primarily focussed on helping students from every course within the university's business school to build strong relationships with each other. We also aim to become a medium for the school to promote events and facilities to be inclusive of all students, whether or not they belong to the faculty. We thoroughly believe that taking an interest in business is integral to future employability and have confidence that through this society we will engage an interest in business from those within other disciplines. We run a calendar of social events throughout the academic year - for students to engage with their fellow course mates outside of lectures. We put a strong focus on helping freshers integrate, and make friends by communicating with the business school buddies. With this we hope to create a support network within the faculty and between the different year groups. Our main goal is to help facilitate students to gain as much as possible from their university experience. We will build upon the old society’s sports team and introduce others. This will help students to get to know each other, work as a team in a fun environment, and help those who do not desire to be part of a sporting society to get some exercise while having great fun. Each year we provide a Christmas Ball and a Summer Ball open to all students at the university. This gives students something exciting to look forward to, increasing their levels of satisfaction. These balls sell out every year proving to be a huge success among students. Finally, we plan to promote employability and other such events through our Facebook page in order to help students interact with businesses, giving them as much information as possible about the options available both now and in the future. We will also conduct a book sale in both semesters.

Founded at the University of Southampton, Cameroon Catalyst is a student led charity which implements infrastructure projects in rural Cameroon which encourage sustainable development. Students fund raise, design and help build the projects in rural Cameroon and over the past ten years the projects completed include a health centre, a school, solar electrification hub, and more recently a series of wells that provide clean water to villages in the region. While the team are supported through a team of qualified trustees, Cameroon Catalyst provides a fantastic opportunity for students wanting a taste of international development charity work. Whether organising fundraising events, designing and building the project or helping promote the work of the charity through media, there is a role for everyone to get great experience. Our current focus is on water and sanitation, as 50% of rural Cameroonians lack access to safe drinking water. We are therefore currently planning a number of news wells to be installed in remote villages to help relieve this issue and provide thousands of people with this basic human right.

Capoeira was born out of the slave trade around 500 years ago in Brazil. It was developed by the slaves as a martial art, however it was designed to look like tribal dances and rituals so that the slave masters would not suspect the violent aspect of the art. A crucial component of learning Capoeira has been the ability to mask your movements and intentions in an apparently non-threatening dance, combining combat and music. At Southampton we have an enthusiastic Capoeira teacher, Mestre Joaozinho, who teaches the Angola style of Capoeira and we also have open training sessions to practice together. You're welcome to come to any of our sessions! Your first session is free. Please see our Facebook group for more info(https://www.facebook.com/groups/SouthamptonCapoeiraSociety/?ref=bookmarks) or if you have any more questions feel free to email us.

The University of Southampton Catholic Society (CathSoc) is a real joy to be part of, even if we say so ourselves! We're just one big family with a wonderful mix of students from many different backgrounds and countries, which makes it possible for everyone to feel welcome and at home. Our main activity is hosting a Mass every Sunday during term time in Building 67 (The Nightingale Building) at 6:30PM, follwed by a home-cooked meal on campus. We also organise a CathSoc night every Tuesday at 7PM in the Faith and Reflection Centre, where we get a chance to relax and meet likeminded students in a friendly and open environment - there may be food here too if you're lucky!. To top it all off, we offer the opportunity to go on various trips such as our very own retreat on the Isle of Wight in November! It has always been a much-loved and enjoyed weekend away from the stresses of university life. The society is based at the Faith and Reflection Centre, and we have support from our wonderful chaplains, Sr Valentina and Fr Jaya, who are always available to provide help, advice or just have a chat - and of course, the student committee are always there to help you feel right at home! Everyone is welcome to our events, even if you haven't been to Mass in years (or aren't even Catholic!), so feel free to bring along a friend or flatmate if you wish! How could you say no to all this?! We can't wait to meet you! P.S join our Facebook page to keep up to date with everything going on at the society: http://www.facebook.com/groups/uos.cathsoc/

We are a small but still growing society and we run our society for two main reasons. One, we aim to make international students from India feel at home in a country so far away from their real home and two, we aim to help non-residential Indians or Overseas Citizens of India stick to their culturally rich roots. However, we welcome students of different nationalities and spread our Indian culture to them as well. As committee, the happiness of our members is our top priority, and we plan events according to this. We organise events like Dishoom , a Bollywood night out. We also celebrate festivals like Holi, which is one of our flagship events and we host Diya - the Diwali ball every year in collaboration with our university's Hindu Society. Both these events have seen sell out crowds. Our second flagship event is the Made in India Republic Day Celebration where we host an Indian cultural showcase with dancers from other universities performing in addition to our Indian Society Southampton dance troupe.

The Meditation Society provides students with the opportunity to take part in and learn about meditation following Kadampa Buddhist philosophies. Through practising meditation and mindfulness, as well as applying Buddhist philosophies to our daily lives, we can learn to maintain a peaceful and productive mind and outlook. The benefits of meditation are endless, and as a society we strive to spread the happiness. Many of the students that attend our sessions do so to promote positive mental health and find that group meditation significantly improves levels of stress, anxiety and depression, which often accompany university life. At both the Student's Union and the University of Southampton, we encourage free speech and the open exchange of ideas. In this way, we welcome peaceful debate of issues within our clubs and societies. We do not however support acts or words that encourage violence or hatred, and are firmly against those who use these methods to further their personal and political aims. We are a mediation society primarily and hold no political links to any particular organisation. Our regular classes are on Wednesdays (5-6pm) on Highfield Campus. Pianosoc is a friendly environment for all people interested in listening to or performing piano of any genre, at any level. We generally discuss all things piano-related and even have a weekly dose of a brief introduction to a new pianist, to broaden our scope of the piano world for members for which it has not been so exposed to. We try to spread the love of piano music. Increase interest for the piano. Make more use of pianos lying around on campus by putting together concerts and playing times, perhaps even one day funding our own piano. We want to be able to offer members who want to pick up piano playing during their time at university classes, for all sorts of levels, ranging from people who have never touched a piano before to those who just want to continue practicing. Our society will cater adequately for pianists of all degrees, something no other society does – especially for those piano players who aren't at a high enough level to join the university orchestra or at a low enough level to forget about piano playing altogether. We also offer piano lessons for both groups and individual ranging from beginners to advance levels. There is a definite demand for Pianosoc; many people play the piano but never really get to meet other pianists since an individual activity. We provide a network of pianists, teachers and people who just have a general love for piano music.

In addition we run other events including music gigs, day trips, games nights, workshops and attend steampunk gatherings both locally and around the country. As a society, we also make an effort to socialise with the local groups in the form of collaboration events and attendance to monthly meetings in order to gain experience and build ties with our more learned counterparts. Throughout the year, we aim to have groups of our members attending the Surrey Steampunk Convivial, a small event in February as a way of introducing newer members to a larger steampunk community, and the 'Weekend at the Asylum' event in Lincoln which is the largest Steampunk gathering in Europe. Both of these events are attended almost religiously since their establishment and we intend to return again every year. We run a popular annual Christmas Vintage Ball once again which has little under 100 in attendance and usually held at the union and features performances from the University's folk society and circus society. We are continually growing as a society and hope to continue introducing new elements to our program every year. The wearing of Steampunk or Victorian clothing is not obligatory! (and we do offer advice if you want to start)

We take on a full professional programme each term, and repertoire highlights in the last couple of years have included symphonies by Mahler, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky. We are a student society which supports UNICEF UK (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). Our aim is to raise awareness and funds to help the millions of children in danger across the world, who on a daily basis face violence, disease, hunger and the chaos of war and disaster. We raise funds for the organisation by means of various student-based events, such as bake sales, treasure hunts, christmas card sales and fast24. We may also collaborate with other societies to hold events and raise awareness of UNICEF within the campus. UNICEF UK is one of 36 UNICEF National Committees based in industrialised countries. UNICEF National Committees raise funds for UNICEF’s worldwide emergency and development work. In 2016 UNICEF UK raised £102.8 million for their work with children worldwide. Every penny of donations which we raise really does count, as little as 12p can protect a child from life-threatening polio. UNICEF On Campus is a UNICEF initiative designed to help university students get more involved in the work of UNICEF. Students have great potential to raise both funds and awareness for UNICEF, with the support of UNICEF UK. UNICEF On Campus University of Southampton society works in aid of UNICEF UK and not in association with UNICEF UK.

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines is an international student movement that aims to combat the access to medicines crisis that claims millions of lives every year. Through concerted organising and campaigning on our own campuses and across the world, we aim to create a more equal system for addressing the health needs of those who are denied access to essential medicines and healthcare. ---------------OUR VISION--------------- Universities and publicly funded research institutions will be part of the solution to the access to medicines crisis by promoting medical innovation in the public interest and ensuring that all people regardless of income have access to essential medicines and other health-related technologies. ---------------OUR MISSION--------------- As a non-profit organization rooted in a global movement of university students, UAEM aims to (1) promote access to medicines and medical innovations in low- and middle-income countries by changing norms and practices around academic patenting and licensing, supported by our own independent research, (2) ensure that university medical research meets the needs of people worldwide and (3) empower students to respond to the access and innovation crisis. ---------------OUR VALUES--------------- As committed students from all over the world who passionately believe in social justice and health equity, we find it unacceptable that millions of people do not have access to essential medicines. We are particularly concerned about people in developing countries who are disproportionately affected by the access to medicines crisis. Universities have a social compact with society and, as educational and research institutions, they have a responsibility to promote and manage the deployment of innovations for the public benefit. In no field are the moral imperatives to do so as clear as they are in medicine. Students are uniquely positioned to push for normative change in their universities and research institutions. We will use the intellectual sophistication, rigor and integrity of our members to fight for increased innovation as well as access to medicines and health-related technologies for all. Our work is guided at all times by principles of non-partisanship, democracy, transparency and respect.

WAMsoc is a medical student led society that aims to widen access to higher education for children from less privileged backgrounds, especially medicine. We have already been a representation of our University on a nationwide scale and we want to continue doing so. We are endeavouring to widen access in many different ways. Firstly we visit local schools, to give the children more information about applying to medicine, and show them that they have the potential to apply if they want. These sessions involve inspiring the children to raise their aspirations and apply to Medical school, as well as giving them the information and resources they need to do so. Another part of our society is running the Learn With Us sessions on campus. These are sessions where children from schools nationwide come to Highfield Campus, to learn about lots of different careers and university courses. We, as a society, represent Medicine at these sessions. We run stations of different activities a medical student does, to give the children more information on what being a medical student involves. Thirdly, we have launched an e-mentoring scheme where we match up current medical students with Year 12 students who are in the process of applying to medical school. Through this scheme, the Year 12 student can get continual assistance and input into applying for medical school from someone who has just undergone this experience.
