make Ecosia the default browser for the university!

Complete
Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees whilst you search! If we, like the University of Sussex has, make Ecosia our uni-wide search engine together we could plant thousands of trees and make a huge difference to deforestation, climate change and biodiversity.
Also if you use Ecosia and can't find what you are looking for they make it so easy to which back to google/ another search engine to do your search there to triple check you have the most up-to-date information. So there is nothing to lose by switching!
I really hope the SUSU can help push this change so we can lead the way as an eco-friendly university!

Hi Isobel,
Thank you for submitting a YMC. Sustainability is really important to SUSU and this is something we've looked into.
Unfortunatley we have found that Ecosia is not actually any better for the environment than Google - Ecosia uses Microsoft Bing at it's back end. Microsoft does not currently use 100% renewable energy, whereas google does use 100% renewable energy and is committed to sustainability. Google also has a better developed algorithim system.
We hope this explains why we have chosen not to support this and makes the use of Google seem more sustainable.
Kind regards,
