Complete

We have been showed the nice new refurbishments in Hartley Library and told that the number of seats have now risen to 2000+  but the reality is that: there are 20000+ students in the university, a third (or maybe even half) of the desks do not have a plug to charge our laptops, the computer rooms are crammed and, out of the 3 of them on level 2, one is systematically booked for lessons and teaching which really should be done somewhere else and not in a library.

Hello again,

I've had a response from the Library, which I'll copy below:

*****

Thank you for your feedback. The Library is aware of  the study space issue and is continually looking at ways to increase the number of study spaces in the Library .  We have now had 2 phases of increasing the number of spaces in the Library, over the past 2 years, and are incorporating our user experience  work of observing how students use space and listening to student feedback in the design of new spaces . This feedback includes the requirement to add more power sockets.  We have added 300 new sockets over the past two years and in new refurbishments we have, as a priority, to add more sockets where possible. We have  a new project which will shortly be auditing all the sockets in the Library with a view to see how we can improve this provision.  The Library is currently working on plans to increase the number of study spaces in further refurbishments to continue the work that has already been completed and will communicate this to students when the information is available.  During exam time we will be opening up our newly refurbished training rooms for student use over this period and this will provide additional workstations and tables.  We will also  add extra temporary study tables where possible.  In addition, the Students Union will be communicating to all students on where all the study spaces are located across campuses for revision and exam time as there are spaces that students do not know are open to them. SUSU will also be opening up additional spaces for this period . We are currently investigating the booking of computer rooms in the Library for teaching in relation to your feedback and will respond more fully on this.

*****

Hopefully that answers the bulk of your question, and as mentioned already we will be opening up a number of the SUSU Meeting Rooms over the exam period to provide additional study space. Keep an eye out for more details, and don't hesitate to get in touch (vpeducation@susu.org) if you have any more questions!

All the best,

Samuel Dedman (VP Education, 2017/18)

Hello,

Thanks for getting in touch - as you say, there has been significant work done to Hartley Library, but there is always more to be done with regards to continuing to improve the study spaces available to students. With this specific element of your submission I'm going to ask the Library for a response, and will let you know as soon as I hear back.

As always, don't hesitate to drop me an email (vpeducation@susu.org) if you have any more questions!

All the best,

Samuel Dedman (VP Education, 2017/18)
