There needs to be active discussion as to methods of how to solve the issue of lack of working space such as that found in Hartley Library. Keeping the Library open 24 hours a day does not solve the problem. With the recent influx in students (due to caps on student numbers lifted in certain subject areas as far as I am aware?) now is as good a time as ever to have this discussion. I personally have stopped using the library as a work space as I can never find a place to sit down and get work done. In fact in many cases due to the numbers, lack of seating and noise levels I find places such as cafes more conducive to work which suggests that at least for me as an individual the library is failing at it's intended purpose - being a good environment for study. It does a good job of lending books though which is also a pretty important function.

There are a few things that you’ve brought up that I would like to address:-

  1. There are currently projects that we are working with the University on: I am working with the University to open up more areas for study during the peak times (i.e. during the day) to ensure that there are alternative study spaces to Hartley Library. This includes working with the University to expand opening hours of libraries at our different sites and looking at options that do not include the libraries. I am also working with Hartley Library to increase the number of workspaces in there so those who would like to work in Hartley Library find it easier to find a workspace. I am making progress and when I have concrete information to share, I definitely will be. Ben Franklin (Union President) is working with the University on projects on a larger scale to solve the space issues.

  1. There was indeed a cap on the number of students in previous years, which was removed this year - this is for the number of students that Universities can accept. This is definitely something that we are working on and aware of.

.

Apologies for the delay, we experienced a technical issue with your request.
