I have noticed that in the Bridge (and possibly the Cafe etc.) don't always have fairtrade sugar. The sugar normally on the bar is fairtrade, but that put out for the postgraduate coffee on Thursdays is not. I know it is a small thing but I really think Susu should make sure that all their sugar/coffee/tea etc. is fairtrade.

There are also many other ways that Susu could be more ethical, with cruelty free products, fruit etc. in the shop without pesticides, and reducing the amounts of plastic packaging.

Hi, thanks for your comments. The Union shop, bars and cafes offer a really great range of fairtrade products, but there is always more we can do to encourage students to make positive choices. I’ll check with our Union Services team about the sugar in particular.

We hope to relaunch the ‘Green Label’ project in the Union shop this year, where products judged to be ‘ethical’ (e.g. well packaged/local/vegan) are specifically labelled. This aims to increase awareness of these issues, increase sales and lead to more ethical products being stocked in the shop. We’d love more people to be involved in this project – email eande@soton.ac.uk if you’re interested!
