The price of 60p around campus for simpley hot water is outrageous. It does not represent the cost at all for hot water. A much lower price such as 30p or anything nearer how much it actually costs for the machines to give out hot water would be acceptable.

Hi Charlie,
Just a really quick one from me - the responses from the Student Forum have been finalised, and the University have this to add:
"From Friday 1 December 2017, free boiling water will be available across all University catering outlets, on the basis that people bring their own cups/flasks to be filled. In the meantime, hot water can be sourced from the Students’ Union free of charge."
This is obviously fantastic news, and I'd like to thank you wholeheartedly for approaching us about this issue. If you want to read about the Forum in more detail, the full notes can be found here: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/sites/19/2017/11/Student-Forum-Final-QA-October-2017.pdf.
As always, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
All the best,
Samuel Dedman (Vice-President Education 2017/18 - vpeducation@susu.org)

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for getting in touch - while hot water isn't something which many people link with Education, ideas such as these quite often make their way up through the SUSU Academic Reps and I've therefore spend a bit of time over the past few months bringing myself up to speed on the discussions so far.
With regards to the Union, I've had a conversation with Tony (Director of Union Services) and he has assured me that we do not charge for hot water in any of the Union outlets. Building 42 also hosts 4 new microwaves installed over the summer months of 2017, so this should have you nicely covered during the Union's opening hours.
For the University, the situation gets a little more complicated. I've been working with the Library staff to explore options for hot water at Hartley, and just recently was pleased to see that the same questions was raised at the Student Forum. Responses to all of the questions raised at the Forum are due over the coming weeks, so I'd urge you to keep an eye on the website (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/studentvoice/) for more information, after which we will see where we stand and where we need to go next. Conversations are also taking place with regards to academic buildings, especially with the University's ambitious building plans for the next few years.
We'll certainly continue to lobby the University, and do let me know if you have any more questions!
All the best,
