Why vote for Renee?
I am applying to be a Student Trustee because I want to support the Students’ Union in making responsible, strategic, and inclusive decisions that reflect the needs of our diverse student body. With experience in leadership, financial management, and academic representation, I believe I can offer a balanced, thoughtful voice to the Trustee Board.
This year, I have served as the Second Year Philosophy Joint Honours Representative. In this role, I have advocated for my peers by collecting feedback, raising concerns at SSLC meetings and working collaboratively with staff to improve the student experience. It’s shown me how essential it is to communicate clearly and listen to different viewpoints whihc are skills that are vital for trusteeship.
I also currently serve as Treasurer of the Amnesty International Society and I have been elected to be President next year. As Treasurer, I’ve been responsible for overseeing our budget, submitting grant requests and ensuring all spending is transparent and aligns with both Union policies and the society’s goals. I’ve handled reimbursements, tracked finances and become very familiar with money hub so I have gained direct experience with the SUSU's financial system and compliance. This role has strengthened my confidence in making responsible financial decisions and balancing short-term needs with long-term planning.
In addition to this, I was part of a student innovation project in partnership with City Life Church, which aimed to tackle homelessness in Southampton. We researched sustainable solutions and presented a proposal and this experience developed my ability to work on strategic initiatives, combine data analysis with social impact and take practical steps toward long-term impact.
My academic background in my Maths and Philosophy degree gives me a unique foundation for this role. Mathematics has developed my analytical and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for understanding financial reports, assessing risk and making evidence-based decisions. Philosophy has strengthened my ethical reasoning and critical thinking which are also key when navigating the responsibilities and decisions trustees face. Together, these disciplines equip me to contribute both logically and morally to board discussions.
Ultimately, I see this role as an opportunity to give back to the student community and to gain invaluable leadership experience. I am excited about the training and development offered and I would be honoured to serve as a Student Trustee.
Thank you for considering my application.
