Renuka 'Renuka ' Jeyaraj - Student Councillor

I am interested in becoming a Student Councillor because I want to contribute to the way students are represented within the Students’ Union and to understand more about how decisions affecting students are made.

I would approach the role with a strong focus on accountability, transparency and listening to different perspectives. I understand from the role profile that Student Councillors are responsible for scrutinising the work of Sabbatical Officers, considering important issues brought to Council and helping ensure that SUSU’s democratic processes are followed.

If elected, I would take the responsibilities of the position seriously by attending Council meetings, engaging with the information provided by officers, and considering issues carefully before contributing to decisions. I would also aim to communicate information clearly and make sure that students have opportunities to understand and engage with matters being discussed.

I am particularly interested in developing my ability to contribute to discussions, work collaboratively with people who have different perspectives and make considered decisions. I would make use of the training and guidance available to Student Councillors and would be willing to ask questions where something is unclear.

I see the position as an opportunity to become more involved in university life while taking on a meaningful responsibility within SUSU. I would bring a committed, responsible, and open minded approach to the role and would aim to contribute constructively to Council throughout the year.
