The Mindful Medical Society
The Mindful Medical Society opens the exploration of health and human flourishing to all staff and students. We have two main aims: (1) Broaden Perspectives on Health: We explore diverse ideas on health and human flourishing to nuance understandings of what it means to care and be cared for. Events in the 25/26 calendar included: Collaborating in Illness (Dean of Southampton Medical School, Professor Diana Eccles); Are plants more then placebos? (Dr Wilcox); Cold Water Therapy (Associate Professor Heather Massey); Restructuring Mental Healthcare (Dr Armstrong); How we Suffer (Consultant Psychiatrist Carlos Hoyos); The Science of Breathing (Dr Mohan). (2) Enhance Student Welfare: We actively combat declining student wellbeing through yoga, breathwork, and meditation sessions that build compassion for self and others. By promoting a more nuanced account of how to deliver, understand and access optimal health, we hope to improve the wellbeing of all at Southampton University.
