lobby the university and disability service to include extensions in Student Support Recomendations

Complete

Students with chronic illnesses are having to submit individual extension requests for every single assignment. I have had my requests rejected multiple times despite attaching my SSRs and far too much personal medical information because I cannot demonstrate that I am currently experiencing a flare up, and having spoken to others I am definitely not the only one experiencing this. If there is evidence of a chronic medical condition how on EARTH are you supposed to provide evidence that it is currently in-the-moment happening to you that won't get rejected!

Student Support Recommendations allow for extra time in exams so I do not understand why assignments should not be treated the same, something along the lines of being able to attach a disabiliy&inclusion letter to an extension request meaning an automatic approval would reduce so much stress of having extension requests rejected and the subsequent special considerations/appeals for the inevitable late marks. If anything as a person with chronic illness, being able to admit needing an extension demonstrates recognition of time management and being able to handle the degree as a disabled person.

I understand that this is a university/department issue but SUSUs support on inclusivity of SSRs would be very helpful!

Hello!

Thank you so much for sending in this You Make Change.

As you may already be aware, myself and the Vice President Welfare and Communities have been working with the University on improving the process around Special Considerations and Extentions. We considered it a priority to make the process easier for students like yourself who have a chronic illness, recognising the barriers that you have outlined here in your message. These new regulations are awaiting final approval at University Senate next week, after which we will be able to detail more about the new process.

What I can reassure you is that the new process works with the Disbability and Inclusion team, instead of putting the burden unfairly on students. Our guidance for staff and students on the process will give better information about what to do in the case of a 'flare-up', whereas currently the guidance is unclear and can lead to an inconsistent application of outcomes.

I am going to close this You Make Change as there will be all-student communications about the changes to the Special Considerations and Extentions process coming over the next couple of months for the next Academic Year. If you have any more questions however, you can email me at vpeducation@susu.org.

Thank you,

Emily
