Starting university is an exciting experience, but it can also bring its fair share of nerves and challenges. From making new friends to finding your way around, there’s a lot to take in. We’ve put this blog together to answer some of the most common questions and share student support tips for your first few weeks. Whether you’re looking for advice on meeting people, joining clubs, finding work, or dealing with homesickness, we’ve got you covered.
What’s the best way to meet new people?
Living in student accommodation – whether halls or private housing – is one of the easiest ways to meet other new students. Some might share your course or interests, and some won’t, but everyone is looking to make friends just like you.
There are plenty of other ways to meet people, too: by joining a society or sports club, volunteering, or working part-time. Remember, you don’t have to find your “forever friends” straight away – everyone’s experience is different, so take your time.
How do you join a club or society?
Joining clubs and societies is a brilliant way to find like-minded people or try out something new. With hundreds to choose from, you can explore them all at our two fairs:
Both are the perfect chance to meet committees, ask questions, and sign up.
And don’t worry if you don’t join straight away – you can sign up for clubs and societies at any point during the year on the SUSU website.
How do you deal with nerves?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous when starting uni – everyone else is in the same boat. Try signing up for a range of opportunities, get involved, and give yourself the best chance to meet people. This is the perfect time to step outside your comfort zone!
How do I find part-time work?
For many students, university is the first time living independently, and earning some extra money can be really useful. A part-time job not only helps financially but also introduces you to new people outside of your course.
SUSU offers flexible student roles in bars, retail, reception, marketing, and more. Keep an eye on our Work With Us page throughout the year to see what’s available.
What if I feel homesick?
Moving away from home is a huge change, and missing home is perfectly normal. Many new students feel the same way.
Try making your room feel like your own with photos and decorations, schedule a video call with family or friends after a couple of weeks, or plan a short trip home during term if possible.
Where can I get help and advice?
The SUSU Advice Centre is here to support you with free, independent, and confidential advice. Whether it’s academic, finance, housing, or other practical matters, we’ll make sure you get the right help at the right time.
If our online guides don’t answer your questions, you can find us in Building 40, Monday – Friday, 09:00–17:00.
Get to know your new city
If Southampton is new to you, getting familiar with the area can really help you settle in. Work out where the essentials are – supermarkets, bus stops, train stations, doctors’ surgeries – and check out what’s happening locally too.
And of course, you can always see what’s happening on campus through our What’s On page. During Freshers (21 September – 6 October) we’ve got loads of daytime and evening events planned to help you make the most of your start at uni.
Remember: you’re not alone
Whatever your first few weeks look like, SUSU is here to support you every step of the way. If you need extra advice or student support, visit our Help and Support page or get in touch with us directly.
