Today, Wednesday 03 December 2025, our Union President, Emma Brown, and the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E. Smith, came together to sign the University and Students’ Union Relationship Agreement.
Signed annually, this agreement sets out how both organisations will work in partnership, with students’ interests at the centre of every decision. It outlines shared commitments to improving the student experience at Southampton. From teaching and learning to wellbeing support, community, and life beyond the classroom.
Emma Brown said: “This marks a truly important moment in the shared history between SUSU and the University. Today is about recognising and celebrating our partnership – where we are both driven by the same ambition – to continue building a university experience that truly reflects the needs, ambitions and voices of our students. I’m incredibly proud of the partnership and the opportunities Sabbatical Officers have to influence key decision making, from the University Executive Board, to major estates projects, education committees, and everything in between. This agreement is something I value deeply, and I am so excited for what we will achieve together in the years to come.”
The agreement also reinforces the importance of a strong, independent Students’ Union that can both collaborate with and constructively challenge the University. Through regular meetings, representation on key University committees, and ongoing dialogue between student leaders and senior staff, it helps ensure that the student voice is heard at every level.
By renewing this agreement, the University and Students’ Union are reaffirming their joint responsibility to listen to students, act on feedback, and create an inclusive, supportive environment where every student can thrive in their studies, their societies, and their wider university life.
