Krzysztof Mikulski, Union President
Hi there! My name is Krzysztof, and I am your Union President for the 2026/27 academic year. My core role is to ensure that the complex, multifaceted student voice is heard and not overlooked when decisions are made. However, as the Union President, my remit is quite large, and I am also responsible for making the university experience as good as possible for our students. So, I am here to help our new students get settled into university life!
Health
Moving away from home means you need to register with a new GP or Dentist!
If you live in Southampton and near Highfield, one of the easiest ways to register with a GP surgery is to go to B48 on Highfield Campus or the Highfield Road Surgery (38 Highfield Road, SO17 1PJ). Both are part of the University Health Service, meaning that no matter which building you go to, you will be registered with the service. If you live in Winchester, not in Southampton, or far away from Highfield campus, you can also register online:
Do not wait until you are ill! Trust me, it’s not worth the stress. As you’re coming to a new city, with new people in close environments, you are likely to get ill (especially during freshers)! As meningitis B has been on the rise recently, it is important to keep your vaccinations up to date and practice good hygiene.
To register with a dentist, the easiest way is to look online and either give them a call or go in and register at their reception:

Coming to university can be quite daunting at first, but there is plenty of support available at the university and opportunities to make friends!
Here at the Union (SUSU), we have more than 370 clubs and societies for you to join! These will be on showcase during Freshers’ Week, and you can look around. If you don’t have time during Freshers’ Week, you can always have a look at the SUSU website, where you can find the societies you want to join:
If you need support with your wellbeing, disability, fees, finance, accommodation or course administration, the student hub is here to help! They are a 24/7 service which operates 365 days a year. They are located in B37 on Highfield Campus, Monday-Friday!
Although the university has a student hub, SUSU has its own Advice Centre that provides free, independent, and confidential advice:
They can assist you with a range of topics including housing, finance, and academic issues. They are a wonderful team and are always ready to help!
Life in Southampton
Welcome to the medieval port city of Southampton! It is very easy to get around with the UniLink and Bluestar buses. The city also has amazing bike routes, so make sure to bring your bike down so you can get around.
Do not worry about getting housing in the city! You may hear stories of students not being able to get housing after November in certain cities around the UK, but here in Southampton there are plenty of options. Do not feel pressured to sign for a house with people you do not know as well, or if you have any reservations.
The city has a variety of pubs, venues and places to go and have fun or socialise! To make the most of your money at these places, download apps such as Student Beans or UniDays.
There are also plenty of supermarkets for you to do your shopping, such as a Lidl near the Archers Road halls of residence, as well as a Sainsbury’s and Aldi in Portwood. There is also a variety of international shops that offer a range of foods from East Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East!
