Special Considerations
Exams can be a stressful time for any student, but Southampton University understands that some students may face additional challenges that could impact their performance. To ensure all students have a fair opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, the University offers a system for requesting special considerations during exams.
The Advice Centre
If you need support during this exam period, The Advice Centre at SUSU is open Monday – Friday 09:00 – 17:00 and offers practical advice and help for academic, housing and financial issues.
Student Hub
The University’s Student Hub offers mental health and wellbeing support, as well as support for students with disabilities, mental health conditions or specific learning difficulties.

Refresh with Nature
Spending time in nature can improve focus, reduce stress, and enhance creativity, offering a valuable way for students to refresh their assessment routines.

Sleep Hygiene
Getting consistent, quality sleep helps improve memory, concentration, and emotional resilience during exam season.

Exercise
Regular physical activity reduces stress hormones and boosts mood-enhancing chemicals, supporting mental clarity and emotional balance during exams.

Good Diet
Eating balanced meals with plenty of nutrients stabilises energy levels and supports brain function, helping you stay calm and focused.

Space Tidiness and Calm Environment
A clean, organised study space reduces distractions and promotes a sense of control and calm.

What to Do After Your Exam
After your exam, take time to relax, reflect, and reward yourself—don’t dwell on what’s done.
Every Tuesday during exams the Advice Centre are hosting some Lawn Games including Giant Connect 4 and Giant Jenga! Come along, play a game and if you’re one of the first 25 people to play, you’ll receive a free soft from one our union venues!

Organisation
Staying organised with a clear plan or timetable helps reduce last-minute panic and keeps your workload manageable.

Revision Techniques
Using effective revision techniques, like active recall and spaced repetition, boosts memory retention and reduces cramming stress.
Drop into the concourse on Building 42 to let other students know your revision top tips and take a look at what other students suggest too!

Meditation and Mindfulness
Practising mindfulness or meditation can calm racing thoughts and help you stay present and focused during high-stress periods.

Stress and Menstruation
Hormonal changes during menstruation can heighten stress and anxiety, so it’s important to be kind to yourself and adjust your routine if needed.
On the 28th May it is Menstrual Hygiene Day, throughout the day The Advice Centre will have a stall and we are hosting a craft afternoon too!

Managing Anxiety
Recognising and naming your anxiety is the first step to managing it, whether through breathing techniques, journaling, or talking to someone.

Social Media – Avoiding Comparisons and Stressful Topics
Limiting social media helps you avoid unhelpful comparisons and stress-inducing content, protecting your peace of mind.

Pomodoro Technique – Time Management – 25 Minute Intervals
Using the Pomodoro technique—25-minute focused sessions followed by short breaks—can increase productivity while preventing burnout.

Signs You Might Need a Break
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, can’t focus, or constantly tired, it’s a sign your brain needs a proper break.

Effects of Stress – Stress Makes You Stupid
Chronic stress impairs memory and decision-making, so managing it is key to performing your best.
