Why vote for Aspen Sartin?

I am running for LGBTQ+ Officer to further collaboration between SUSU and societies in addressing LGBTQ+ issues. I will apply my experience on committee for the LGBTQ+ Society (Treasurer 2021-22, Events Officer 2022-23) to a higher-impact role in which I can advocate for every LGBTQ+ student at Southampton.

As someone who was in first year at the height of national lockdowns, I am acutely aware of the importance of community in battling social isolation. During that time the LGBTQ+ student community was a lifeline for me, and the support I received there has been my motivation for the work in my volunteer roles ever since. In being your LGBTQ+ Officer, I can continue that work, and be at the forefront of fostering the solidarity and community that inspired me.

Through two years working for the LGBTQ+ Society, my involvement in the community has been extensive. In my roles I worked with SUSU, The Edge Nightclub, UoS Pulse, Southampton Pride, and People’s Pride Southampton. I organised and hosted a wide range of events, contributed to charity initiatives, and was part of an award-winning committee (SUSU Society of the Year 2021). I consider this experience my greatest strength, and I am excited to use it in this role.

A persistent issue in university LGBTQ+ spaces is the underrepresentation of BAME and mature students. As LGBTQ+ Officer, I will work closely with the BAME and International Officers. Additionally, I will facilitate collaboration between clubs and societies to promote visibility, amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups in the conversation on LGBTQ+ issues. Through this, I aim to make university LGBTQ+ spaces safe and comfortable for students of all backgrounds.

My lived experience at Southampton has given me the knowledge, skills, and drive to represent our community sensitively and diligently. Allow me to fight for a better life for all LGBTQ+ students.
