Persian
In Persian culture, we celebrate the longest night of the year (called Yalda). Which is on the 20th/21st December (1st Dey - beginning of winter in the Persian calendar) The longest and darkest night of the year is a time when friends and family gather together to eat, drink and read poetry until well after midnight. Fruits and nuts are eaten and pomegranates and watermelons are particularly significant. The red colour in these fruits symbolizes the crimson hues of dawn and the glow of life.
“Yalda Night” was one of the holy nights in ancient Iran, included in the official calendar of the ancient Iranians from 502 BC during the time of Darius I. The festivities that take place on this night are an ancient tradition.
The Organisers

Persian society aims to introduce Iran and Persian culture to our academic community and offer celebrations and events based on the ancient culture of Iran. In addition, participate in Social events to introduce Iran and learn about other countries and cultures as well. Persian society organise regular gatherings for students, staff and alumni in order to create an opportunity for them to make friends, share their problems and reach for help if needed. The society tries to materialise these objectives through some cultural and social activities
