The Student Activities Department exists to encourage all students to engage in an exciting and innovative student-led environment, where we nurture and excel in shared passions and interests to enrich student life. With the increase in tuition fees and the related student expectation of their University experience, it is now more important than ever that SUSU consistently and effectively delivers on its role of ensuring all students have the “time of their lives” whilst studying at the University of Southampton
Elected officers, through their committees, decide which activities will deliver the best possible engagement opportunities for student members. The Student Activities staff team supports and provides continuity for these committees both by providing knowledgeable advice and experience and by providing administrative support. Currently the staff team supports the following 4 committees: Athletic Union, Junior Common Room (JCR), Raise and Give (RAG) and Societies. Through this student led committee structure, we support the following activities:
- Athletic Union with over 80 sports clubs
- Community Volunteering providing a significant number of opportunities for students to either undertake volunteering work and/or set up their own student led projects within the local community
- Junior Common Rooms (JCRs) – supporting the students in Halls of Residence
- RAG (Raise and Give) raising funds for charity all year round
- Societies and the Performing Arts with more than 180 societies
- Social Programmes – providing a range of social activities for students
- Student Enterprise encouraging and supporting entrepreneurial students
Our departmental plan for the coming year identifies these three core goals:
- To empower student group leaders to deliver their goals, recognising and rewarding their talent
- To actively encourage all students to participate in inclusive, safe and innovative opportunities and activities, wherever they may be
- To develop further the excellent professional support service provided to all our student groups
