Stop selling food items in the SUSU shops that contain palm oil.

Almost every sandwich or wrap I purchase from the SUSU shop has palm oil in its list of ingredients and using palm oil is just a cheap alternative that has devastating effects on wildlife. Most deforrestation is occuring due to obtaining Palm oil for food and it is killing off habitats for Orangutans who are now facing extinction as a result. I think this can easily be amended.

Thanks.

Responses

Hi there,

Our response from The Shop is as follows: Unfortunately over 90% of the items in the shop contain palm oil. What we have started in October 2018 is to speak to suppliers and see if the is anyway they could look to source an alternative product. We may look as an organisation to halving the amount of products containing Palm oil by 2020. However, this is a huge piece of work to complete as nearly all chocolate contains palm oil along with soaps etc.

If you would like to talk more about this please do email me at vpwelfare@susu.org.

  • I think you need to weigh up things. There are indications that this drive to remove palm oil will ultimately result in more devestating utilisation of land.
