Stop purchasing new SUSU hoodies for volunteers and Sabbs every year

Each year SUSU outfit each of the student volunteers and staff with personalised hoodies. Given the current state of austerity at SUSU, I consider this to be a waste of not only money, but also manufacturing resources.

Given SUSU's stance on climate change, it seems somewhat hypocritical that they would purchase these hoodies new at least once a year for each position - sometimes more than once a year, in the event of personnel change. Fast fashion is a primary target for reducing consumption and waste, and this is a prime example of fast fashion. Most SUSU officers will wear their hoodies for the period of time in which they are an officer, and then never again.

I understand the benefit to having easily identifiable SUSU officers on campus. Therefore, I would propose an alternative to new personalise hoodies every year. Instead, SUSU could purchase a stock of unpersonalised hoodies that just feature a title of "SUSU Officer" in multiple sizes, that can be allocated to officers for the period of time in which they are an officer, and then handed in. If further identification is required, then perhaps badges with a reduced economic and environmental cost could be used instead.

Hi again,

I have written the report and can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1yv0lVGNabcPr_MKMA5VUu8s_S-OFV6B9

This has been sent to senate to discuss our suppliers.

Kind regards,

Hi again,

This was taken to union senate on the 10th March 2020 as there was not enough time to discuss on the 3rd December 2019.

However, the consensus was to keep the hoodies for sabbs a they are classed as core staff. As for our student officers and leaders, the senators voted to keep the clothing as they believe the hoodies make them more identifiable, easier to approach as their name is on it and people do like the hoodies. With that in mind, I was tasked to find a sustainable clothing supplier who will may be able to supply SUSU with hoodies and am currently looking into this to take to the last senate. We also discussed scrapping the course rep t-shirts as nobody wears them and came up with the alternative of lanyards or badges. I will be looking into quotes forboth and consulting course reps about this option.

Kind regards,

Jo Lisney, VP Education and Democracy 2019-20, (vpeddem@soton.ac.uk)
