Install more microwaves or replace existing microwaves with commercial grade ones

Queues to use the microwave ovens in the library and SUSU concourse are always so long. Each person on average takes around 2.5minutes to microwave their food. I would recommend replacing the existing 800W microwave ovens with commercial grade 1500W/1600W which can heat similar portions in 15seconds. This was something implemented in my previous workplace. Your existing Samsung 800W microwaves cost £69 on John Lewis whereas a 1500W microwaves are £129 on Adexa. For an extra 60 quid, queues would be 10x quicker.

Hello,

I come back to you with a final update and good news! Our Facilities team have scoped out the space and we will be putting extra microwaves in Bar 3 in January so hopefully this will shorten the queues for the current ones on level 4!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to get in touch with me via president@soton.ac.uk

Kind regards,

Emily Harrison,

Hi there,

Thanks for your You Make Change submission.

In terms of more powerful microwaves, this is something we’d look at when the microwaves are due for replacing.  It would not be a sustainable use of funds to replace working microwaves.

As for getting more, we are open to ideas about where we could put more microwaves as there isn’t any more space on level 4. We will look at potential space on level 3 or 2 and I will come back toy ou with an update ASAP. However, if you have any suggestions please feel free to get in touch with me via president@soton.ac.uk

Kind regards,

Emily Harrison,

SUSU President, 2019-20
