Increase the library opening hours

Complete

Prior to lockdown myself and many other students did the majority of our work in the hours after 6PM when the library is now closed. As the library can be safely opened during lockdown I don't see why its hours have been reduced. Given that the university has been forced to takeaway so much already the reduced opening hours seem particularily uneccessary.  Furthermore only opening the library in the day means that all students go there at once and so we are pushed into closer contact therefore increasing the risk of covid 19 transmission. The currently library opening hours are significantly, negatively affecting my ability to work and complete my degree.

Please re-open the library full time.

Dear Vincenzo,

Thank you for your submission. We have been receiving a lot of feedback from students requesting that library hours are extended. This has been shared with the team at the Library who have provided us with this response:

"The Hartley Library is currently not offering 24 opening hours as we continue to maintain the balance of providing study space for students who have returned to campus, the need to reduce the number of people (staff and students) on campus to ensure we remain Covid-secure and to comply with the governments guidance that staff should work from home if they can. More details are available here: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/welcoming-you-back.page"

We are working regularly to ensure that hours can be extended in line with Government guidelines and to ensure the safety of our students. When it is safe to do so the library will announce changes to its times. In the meantime, we will continue to share your feedback to them and work on solutions.

If you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to reach out: vpeddem@soton.ac.uk

Kind Regards,

Avila
