Improve the cold food offering in the shop

Complete

A sandwhich or similar from the shop is typically the quickest and cheapest way to get lunch on campus. I have a few points to raise:

- Would it be possible to offer more low/no meat options? I would rather avoid battery-farmed halal chicken, but it is often seems to be the only choice other than plastic cheese and a single vegan option.

- Is there any way to eliminate the plastic wrappers? I understand this is practically challenging, so could SUSU at least offer a convenient 'soft plastics' recycling collection?

- I object to the concept of a 'meal deal' involving a plastic bottle of sweetened, flavoured drink. It contributes to health, dental health, climate and plastic waste problems. (I accept that no SU, and probably no government, would dare take away people's right to be economically incentivised into bad habits!)

Thank you for your submission!

I will answer each of your questions separately:

1) This is something we have raised with our supplier and, post Christmas, we will review our sandwich offerings in The Shop. If you have any vegetarian/vegan suggestions please send them my way and we'll look to see if they are viable!

2) We do already have a soft plastics recycling station, located at the entrance of Concourse in B42.

3) We are currently looking at other drink options in the meal deal, though we feel it's not fair to remove people's choice to have a sweetened, flavoured drink in their meal deal.

If you have any further queries or would like to discuss this further, feel free to email me at president@soton.ac.uk

I aggree that SUSU needs a greater selection of Veggie and Vegan food, I very rarely get food from susu any more due to their poor veggie selection and poor sandwich quality.

However, the meal deal is a much needed part of SUSU, providing cheap lunch to students in an ongoing cost-of-living crisis! Expanding and improving the meal deal to include healthier snack and drink options, and helping improve the variety and quality of sandwiches is the way forward, not scrapping the meal deal entirely!

Agreed! Also, the 40p increase in Dr Pepper is insane... I also don't like any of the vegan options for sandwiches, and it's not worth the hefty £3.75 cost, convenient or not! Let us get water/ something else with our meal deals, not those awful cans.
