Provide more recycyling bins

Recycling is incredibly important for the environment, and we have a duty to protect it.

There are some multi bins on redbrick, which have both recycling and general waste, and we need more of these. However, both on redbrick and everywhere around campus there are bins for just general waste. Too many times I see people throw plastic bottles or aluminium cans in the general waste, two of the easiest things to recycle.

Plastic bottles take up to ONE THOUSAND years to degrade in landfill, and as they degrade they release toxins into the environment. Aluminium cans NEVER degrade, they remain in landfill forever, but they can be recycled INFINITELY.

I would like to ask for SUSU to replace the general waste only bins on redbrick (e.g. outside susu shop) with the multi recycling&general bins, and to help me to get the university to add multi bins around the campus grounds.

By only having multi bins, people always have the choice to recycle. This is the first step to reducing the waste the university produces and reducing our damage to the environment.

Thank you for your submission!

As the bins are within the remit of University estates, I have taken this to them and am in active discussion the get them implemented. There are currently multi-recylcling bins at the entrance of Concourse in B42 and I would advise all students to use them correctly, as I agree it is imperative for everyone to act sustainably.

If you have any further queries or would like to discuss this further, feel free to email me at president@soton.ac.uk

Many thanks,
