Improve sustainability in halls

Complete
I attended a different uni previously where kettles and toasters where provided in halls. I was surprised they aren't at Southampton. As a consequence thousands of students are buying new kettles and toasters every year, many of which will likely be dumped if people move in with other people next year: no matter how much you like tea, no student house needs seven kettles! Reducing consumption is such an important part of reducing our impact on the planet.
There should also be general waste bins in halls. In my old flat in Glen Eyre, we had two recycling bins and a food waste bin, but no general waste bin. Not everything can be recycled, and by not providing a general waste bin, people are encouraged to contaminate recycling.

Thank you for your submission!
The issue of many students bringing kettles to halls is frequently discussed at halls-based meetings I attend, we are always looking for ways to avoid it though logistically it's a hard issue to tackle. There have been trials of asking students to donate household items for the arriving students at Wessex Lane halls, this is something the residences team is looking to expand and trial elsewhere.
The point of general waste bins has been actioned, the residences team are rolling them out to all halls, though have only completed Wessex Lane so far. Until all halls have general waste bins, students are encouraged to take general waste to the purple lidded bins outside.
If you have any further queries or would like to discuss this further, feel free to email me at president@soton.ac.uk
