Changing the late penalty cap from 5 working days to 5 calendar days is an outrage.
It does not consider that many students, myself included, work very long hours on the weekend due to the Cost of Living crisis. I cannot 100% dedicate my weekends to my academic studies when I am trying earn money to survive, and yet the University feels it acceptable to punish me for this by taking off an extra 10% of my mark every day. Disgusting.
This should be rectified as soon as possible.

Hi,
Thank you for submitting this concern, and apologies for my delay in responding.
This change was introduced to increase equity among students - some academic areas were setting deadlines on Fridays so students had the weekend to work on university assessments without the late submission penalty coming in, thereby encouraging more students to have to work on weekends, compared to students with assessment deadlines set earlier in the week who would experience the penalty the following week day. The longer term plan includes encouraging lecturers to not set deadlines on Fridays, to further reduce the expectation that students should be working on assessments over the weekend.
Any further questions about this, please reach out to me directly by emailing vpeddem@soton.ac.uk.
Kind regards,
Rebecca
